I'm sure this has been discussed extensively, but I wasn't able to find anything on it in the search function.
I have a set of HD D44 Spicer axles with the 297 u-joints For Sale. I have been running these in my Early Bronco for the past couple years. While weighing them for shipping, I noticed the u-joint caps were rotating in the long inner yokes. I removed the c-clips and was able to work the u-joint caps out by hand.
If I tack weld the caps, what kind of longevity could the new owner expect?
I already had these sold for $250, but what are they worth now?

they probably aren't worth shipping now. you can weld the caps and that will work, but sellin them for $250 is a lot much for them in the current shape.

I agree that they aren't worth $250 now, but I think they are worth more then shipping. It's just the long inner that seems to have lost the press fit. I would think the other 3 shaft's and 2 of the 297 u-joints would be worth something.
"They aren't worth shipping, but welding the caps will work?"
Could you expound?

What they are worth is up to the person that is buying them.
I stopped welding the caps years ago. Now I just tack weld the ends of the clips so they stay in place. I think the welding does less damage that way.
dirtrod---you're right ....the tacking of the clips saves on damage. Been there...though it is a minor pain to ungrind those clips off later on. A small dremel with the mini grinding wheels is very nice for that.
Possibly but not sure, a more effective method of locking the caps in place is red lock-tite or sleeve retainer locktite stuff.
Full clips are the professional way to go but since reworking the ears to accept a full clip is beyond most people then that leaves Moser axle co. which wants 150 each for a custom hi-strength axle with full clip capability. There are a total of 4 axle shafts to consider. pricey route.
I presently have full clips on the inner axles only since those are Moser.....and clip tacks on the outers.
A friend of mine chose to tack the caps themselves....those tacks eventually gave out and the caps started to come out again.
I have a shot of a full clip on this link- http://www.dreamwater.com/zuk/toyotapattern.html

I feel that tack welding the caps on is a GREAT way to go with stock Spicer shafts. In my experience, it has helped keep the tips of the caps from blowing off. All of my spare Spicer axles have the caps tack welded (but not my Warn shafts). I just pack the ujoints full of grease, and then do one tack, let it cool, and then do the next one. Don't go overboard with your tack welds or the axle won't fit through the knuckle when you install it. ;)
Just my .02. :)
