Here's what came today.

The PEZ dispenser is for scale (duh).

And the cut-off switch...

I won't be able to install them 'till next week, but I just thought I'd throw them up if no one had seen them yet.

EDIT: Here's the BEP site (http://www.bepmarine.com/showproduct.cfm?productid=859)

What's PEZ?

SEARCH! :flipoff2:

I knew I should have just used a roll of film to show scale.

Gee, Jeff, do you suppose they don't have Pez in Oz?

Perhaps if we had said they are similar to "Smarties", our friends in Oz might have understood better-of course, I might be all wrong as well.

Peace,
PT

DUDE !

Those are some nice boxes !

300A !!

Most of those things are struggling at 150. One can actually winch through those if you're careful.

What's the $bling$ on those things - the spec page didn't say.

oooooooooh - just noticed they have a 2500A (!) intermittent version - sh*t !!!

I'm fairly sure they have PEZ in OZ.... I lived there for the last 5 years.... Of course, Bodgerover is in Kiwiland. In case you haven't seen a map, it is a long way from Oz....... :flipoff2:

You see (at least in Ozzyland) they are somewhat behind the times on the sexual equality front.... Most men don't exactly do anything usefull around the house, the women do all the work...... So some men, not necessarily Bodgerover, would not normally go to the type of place that sold PEZ......

All in fun boys....

Shat, back on topic. Looks purdy, a lot of bling, I assume. Not exactly the Pirate CB way... :p

No, you're right, it's not exactly the CB Pirate way.

I had an experience recently that tought me very clearly that I shouldn't be scrimping when it comes to things electrical.

I'd hate to have to come back after a trip and show you all pictures of a burned out CrewCab. Without going into a lot of details, but coming clean at the same time, I made a mistake and damn near lost the whole thing.

I won't be making that mistake again.

The VSR was $USD152.81 and the 550A Battery Switch was $USD63.38.

Not cheap, but these things are sweet. I'm going to have to re-do some of my main battery cables and figure out where to put that battery switch that is easily reachable but not too obvious to thieves. I think I have a good spot.

The neat thing about the switch is the padlock function, which I think I'll take advantage of if I have to leave it for extended periods.

Anyway, yeah, not CB, not booty-fab, but definitely some of the best electrical pieces I've ever purchased.

Typo? 52.81 seems real chaep to me?

That switch is huge! I was thinking about one of those, just couldn't figure out where to put it.

Why don't you mount it on the drivers front corner panel? It would look real good there! Also when you leave the car you can just switch all power to OFF! :flipoff2:

PEZ?

Thought it might be viagra for rabbits from the look of the container....

And 'Smarties' are called 'Pebbles' down here. They are marketed as Smarties in Australia to appeal to the Ozzies greatest insecurity :flipoff2:

Nice electrical bits - pity they cost more than I earn in a week  . I am going to have to stick with the hard wired with a fancy spanner disconnect version in the short term.

What burnt out your wiring in the crew cab? [probably hard wired with a spanner disconnect knowing my luck].... Is that smoke I can smell? Gotta go.......

The large amounts of heat & flame associated with high current levels is not something you want to get involved with more then once.

I deal with it a lot in my work function, both low voltage (lots of DC current) and high voltage (lightning protection). Mistakes are a bitch and things sorta just vanish..."funny - I thought there was a strap here..."

:nuke:

hehehe

$65 USD for a 550A switch is waaay cheap !

Sorry Michael.... it was my doing with the PEZ dispenser comment. I just thought it was kind of funny seeing it in the picture. Not the normal thing you see on this board.

So what is the story for going for these in the first place? Something about a short and a fire?

Yeah Baby !

If you're gonna short a battery, might as well make it a AGM ! They can dump loads of short circuit current because of their low internal resistance. That wrench wouldn't last long.

How would you explain that to the Snap-On man ??

Looks good Mike.

Care to elaborate on the electrical problems you had previously? Did they involve the Hella keyed cutoff switches?

Thanks man,

Billster

Checking in from N. Utah...

The problem was entirely my fault, and is kind of embarassing. I only relate the story to hopefully keep others from overlooking such a simple thing.

When I wired in the compressor for my on-board air I used an old Sanden compressor from my '90 RRC.

Had been working flawlessly for over a year, but on my last trip out to the desert over Christmas the hot lead that feeds the compressor clutch somehow got loose and the wire's insulation was rubbed off by the spinning clutch pully.

Sucked the hot wire around the pully shaft at least once and started to short out on the compressor housing/clutch.

I'm driving along and can smell this weird smell, look around, don't notice anything weird, ignore it until my EYES STARTED STINGING  noticed smoke coming out from behind my switch panel on my dashboard, shut the truck down IMMEDIATELY and came to a screeching halt on a gravel road.

Jumped out, threw the hood up (no small feat to do it quickly with the spare on the hood) saw FLAMES from the compressor ran and pulled the fire extinguisher from beneath the drivers seat ran back around and doused them with a few hits from the extinguisher.

Got the fire out, pulled my knife out and cut the hot lead to the compressor (insulation was still smoldering).

Realized (and here's the object lesson kids) that
I'D FORGOTTEN TO PUT THE HOT LEAD ON A FUSE!!!!!

Man I'm an f-in' idiot.

So, I trimmed the wire back, insulated it with some electrical tape, cleaned up the burned wire mess and inspected my other wires. Everything else looked fine, so I counted my lucky stars and went on my way.

The wires in the dash were melted, the switch was destroyed, but nothing that's beyond an easy repair and replacing the switch.

So, the compressor is toast (or at least the clutch is), I need to get another one in there and re-plumb it back to my OBA system.

I have some additional wiring to do in the engine bay, so I'll take care of PROPERLY wiring in the hot lead to the compressor next time 'round.

I'll take the raspberries from you guys, just hoping that it teaches us all (myself included) a lesson.

Triple-check and frequently inspect ALL of your wiring.

You never know....
