: NP 205 tranny and what oil?
Rockcrawler_101 01-14-2004, 09:34 PM Ok i got my np 205 from a junk yard and when i put it in the back of my truck it started to spill out ATF now i thought 205's ran gear oil! What should i put in it? it was out of a 74 f 100 with a c 4 infront of it it think. Thanks!
Dave C 01-14-2004, 09:57 PM i run gear oil in mine
I've seen specs for 50W motor oil and I've heard of people using basic 85-90W hypoid gear oil.
The ATF maybe leaked in from the C-4 it was attached too. (more like a c-6 me thinks)

I'm wondering about that too... don't think I've ever seen or heard of a C4/205 combo before
oh, & I run 85/140 in mine.
Commando7 01-15-2004, 10:56 AM Iv'e never hread of this combo but I think the C4 would explode before the 205 gave up, Like ALPO said use 85-90W hypoid gear oil.
jopes 01-15-2004, 10:58 AM 85w/140 in mine as well
infoford 01-15-2004, 12:17 PM hmm 74 F100 I thought most of those trucks got a dana model 21 Transfer case the old in and out box or a 203 case but even those got the gear oil

An automatic would have a married NP-205. only the NP-435 got the stupid D-21.
FYI, for those wondering how a F-100 had a married T-case when a F-250 of 1974 didnt', well That's Ford for ya!

YellowSub1962 01-15-2004, 10:25 PM 85-140 in summer and 85 in winter...oh wait we don't have winter in So Cal... :flipoff2:
been running 85-140 for 5 years now and 200K miles (actually more I'm guessing, but thats all I can really back up referencing the motors I've gone through) - I even ran straight 140 for a portion of those miles and had no problems, but the 85-140 will lube much better at cooler temps and before the case is warmed up
:usa:

Actually IIRC 30wt motor oil is spec'd for 203s
76K5Blazer 01-16-2004, 12:42 AM atf is also
anything from motor oil from gear oil to atf :D
demonranger 01-16-2004, 06:12 AM Just put gear oil in it 85w90 or 85w140 either one will work the 140 will be tougher to shift in cold weather until the oil gets warmed up

ATF is NOT motor oil, or gear oil, All three are specific in their properties and functions.

Rockcrawler_101 01-16-2004, 03:46 PM thats what i though that all 205's took gear oil.
