: Need advice! Planning 24" lift!!!

MonsterGM
01-15-2004, 06:01 PM
I have a 87 K5 Blazer. I want to lift the truck about 24". I have priced out custom springs, driveshafts, and whatnot and I must say that the cost is huge. Here's my plan:

Obtain a total of 24, four-inch lift blocks. That's 12 for the front and 12 for the rear. That equals out to be 6 on each spring perch, and at 4" a piece, that gives me 24" of lift. I will simply stack the blocks on top of each other and clamp it down with custom-made U-bolts fabricated from threaded-rod at Home Depot. To get around custom driveshafts, I will build a subframe under the truck to drop the engine, tranny, and T-case down 18". For the steering I will build a custom crossover setup utilizing pieces of chain-link fence that get ruined last year when a tree fell across my fence.

Does this sound like a good idea? any information would be greatly appreciated

Holy shit, disco trucks are gay and sure as hell hope you are joking about stacking lift blocks and using them in the front. O yeah and who the hell needs 24" of fawkin lift? Plan on running 80" tall tires without cutting fenders?

yeah you should def add some body lift too, keep your COG lower...

Dont listen to them Monster.

You are on the right track but there is one downfall. You can only stack even lift blocks on Ford trucks. GM vehicles require an odd number block. You could stack 8 3" blocks for 24" of lift or 5 5" blocks for 25" of lift. Stacking even lift blocks in a GM vehicle would be very dangerous and could scratch your chrome tie rod.

Toyoda
01-15-2004, 06:53 PM
he will keep the COG low when he lowers the motor and tranny.

instead of using allthread, use some rebar and weld some bolts on the end. That would be cheaper and the rebar bends real easy when its hot. That would make a nice bend around your axle.

I'm at 48" right now. Mostly lift blocks front and rear but some of it is from rearched springs too.

I have an 84" High Lift jack that was custom made for me. That bitch sticks out both sides of the roofline like a goddamn WING! I LOVE it!

You're a big pussy. Come back when you can seriously think about even coming NEAR my 48" bad ass truck. BIATCH!

Just run a 12" drop hanger and stack two 6" blocks for the front. It'll save ya $$$ from buying so many blocks. It'll also point your d-shaft at the t-case for better shaft angle. For the rear just run a shackle 12" longer that you have now and two 6" blocks. This will have the same benifits as the front.

Sound good to ya?

Go get to work on it.:)

you don't want to use lift block come on now. You should run another pair of springs standin straight up of the stock set. That way you get the lift plus the soft ride every one likes so much. Go find leaf springs from the back of a mini-van those kick ass!!!!!!! picture it like this 2 mini-van leaf springs per side of the axle, put shackle on both ends then bolt them to you stock springs and the frame. It totally kicks ass. :flipoff2:

Keep those great ideas coming, I just bought a 78 K5 Blazer for $25....it has a 454/400/205 and 3.73 gears with 37MTRs...

unfortunately, one of the spark plug holes is the size of a quarter...makes a cool PUFF-PUFF sound when it is running...

anyway, I want to run some 44's and DO NOT want to cut the fenders(it has some KEWL bushwhackoff flares on it). and I hate it when tires rub.

I have some hockey pucks I stole from our new hockey team and plan on a 8" BL.

I think some 4'X8" tubing between the frame and spring hangers will cut down on the size of the lift blocks and with help decrease axle wrap when I get on it at Moab.

OH yeah, any ideas for a cool stereo and where to mount some pink neon under the body?

What you really need to do is get 4 pcs of 4" sq. tubing 24" long and tack weld it to the axle then weld your springs to it and you are done take off driving down the freeway

I hope this guy is joking

Hell why 24 inches ? Go for the gold . Run 3 of the 12 inch blocks . There is a guy here with 12 inch blocks under Ram . And he is only 5 foot 6 inches so if you are going 24 inches of lift you must be what 4 foot 1 inch . Or have a real small drive shaft .:flipoff2:

ToyFord

You could use 4x4 wooden blocks to save money, or maybe even 4x6 blocks. Now keep in mind that a 4x6 is really only 3-1/2"x5-1/4" when building your custom u-bolts. Safety first you know. As far as the steering set up, how about some old curtain rods. I bet you could find a set on a garbage can on pick-up day? As far as drive lines, duct tape the front one to the rear and use that set up in back. Who needs a front driveline, with 24" of lift you won't need 4WD. All at your own risk (and anyone with in 1/2 mile of you on or near the road) of coarse.

Don't use the steel blocks, get some old tires (use semi tires, there the best) and cut squares out of the tread the same size as the blocks you want to use. Then stack these squares up as much as you want for the lift. These stacks will give you a softer ride and still give you the lift you want.

As far as the sub frame, why not just put the stacks described above on you body mounts - you could even take some 2" PVC and stand it up to make really long body mounts with the stacks on the ends to keep the PVC from spreading too far.

Good luck and post pics.:flipoff2:

i dont think you need u-joints... might as well do it right :D

go ahead and weld all your blocks together.... then weld those to the axle.... then weld the top to the springs.... that way, you will for sure be stronger :p you may also consider getting some suport brackets in between the blocks, this way if u hit a curb or somthing, your off-road ready :D you may also think about some tree branches for ladder bars.... use oak.
