I was thinking you'd be running some type of dual setup.

I think this setup with the turbo engine will work awesomely. It seems to me that you should almost always be in the powerband, due to the low gearing. I don't know why people are wanting to stay away from turbos (they claim lag), but I know in my fairly stock TJ (regeared to 4.56s is all) when I'm in low and 1st gear, I'm easily spinning 2-3k when I really need the power.

That's cause it's not a Formula Toy Chassis... It's an X-Chassis, linked front and rear, no toy frame. Nice work Mike.

What is a air strut, obviously it's someting that can change the ride height, but is it like a air bag?
How is the "custom built air struts for 14" adjustable ride height" going to work with the airshox?

Interested in this too, Since a strut helps to locate the axle unlike a shock...

Its top-secret but it works like an air bag but does a couple of other things air bags cant. More after the system is installed.

Never seen one used as a strut before, but my dumptruck has one on the back and it's used to open and close the pneumatic tail gate locks. Didn't realize they had enough stroke to be used for a strut.

I believe the holes are made by a "dimple dye". I could have the name
wrong, but basically it punches the holes and also curves the hole edges to add
strength. He uses the same process on the motor mounts he sells for Formula Toys.

Those holes there arent actually dimpled, they were probably punched with an iron worker or maybe the cut them out with the cutter also. I don't remember who's it was, but I've seen pics of camo using a cnc plas cutter, so maybe it was airrides?

DemoMike

You've got mad fab skills, I love the crossmembers! What are you using for all of the holes? Holesaw? Press? CNC? I noticed some of the clearanced areas aren't perfect circles so I'm leaning towards CNC. And free handling would take way to long....? Must be nice to have such access to equip like that!!!! Anyway progress looks good, that turbo pretty much puts you in WHITEKNUCKLE offroad territory.

I am putting it on a 22ret. supposed to be good for 100 hp increase in power over the stock turbo. Should put me in the 250 hp range. With a bunch of other LC stuff you can get 450 hp out of this turbo.

Hopefully the motor wont be falling out again anytime soon. The really funny part about it is Steve (X chassis 001) was just over telling me about how his fell off the jack stand, broke all the tack welds and the motor fell out. 45 minutes later crash. Mike, do you think a peice of 7/8" grade 8 all thread would be strong enough too?

I cope the head of a 1 1/4" grade 8 bolt on the mill and then TIG them on on my own application. It looks good and gives some decent weld surface area too. Just another way of doing it.

So far the lower end ICOM mic has been holding up, but you can't do any of the programming with it. Since it has only been the PTT button that has been dying on the factory mic, we have to keep that mic in the rig as well if we need to set new channels, etc. I just installed a Vertex in the tow rig yesterday. We will see if it holds up better.

The bore is 4" @ 14" stroke. Cost is about $350 each.
The struts work like hydraulic cylinders, you can pressurize either side of the piston. This gives ride height adjustment, spring rate adjustment and allows each wheel to be pulled in independently, like with a winch on the axle. Also by pressurizing both side of the piston you get the effect of an infinitely adjustable sway bar.
So far it works great crawling and speeding down dirt roads. I have yet to test it in the woops.

Air Ride
10-25-2006, 08:21 AM
why did you need the air shocks in the front too? couldnt a pair of regular shocks work just as well?
There are two big advantages to using the air shock over a standard shock. First the air shock provides extra spring rate incase the struts should fail. Second I run the air shocks with fairly low pressure and high oil volume so they also act as a progressive bump stop.

motorcitydak
10-25-2006, 09:22 AM
do the rams have a cushion on each end? if they do, that would act as a bump stop anyway. How much weight are the rams supporting then if you have the air shocks on there too? Im considering switching from my air bags to the rams and have 12 inch travel MX6-R shocks on them, do you think this would be a good idea?

Air Ride
10-25-2006, 02:31 PM
Each ram is capable of supporting 1500 lbs. They have cushions, but they only come in at the last 1/2" of travel. So they are totally inadequate for bumps stops.

"Im considering switching from my air bags to the rams and have 12 inch travel MX6-R shocks on them, do you think this would be a good idea?"

Not sure if thats a good idea or not.

mikey_d05
11-27-2007, 12:35 PM
Bringing this back from the dead because of your other thread. Would there be anything wrong with using a hydro cylinder for this? I think it would be a cool idea to try but $350/cylinder is kinda up there for having to throw air shocks at it besides.

zcarczar
11-27-2007, 02:42 PM
I think the only problem that hydro cylinders would have is the lack of progressive spring rate. I know the low riders ive seen ride like crap because the hydraulic fluid doesnt have any give compared to air bags, I dont know if there is anything you can get which will give you that affect with hydraulics.

Ha, no, I meant using air in a hydraulic cylinder. You'd have to run an air charged accumulator or something similar to get any flex out of a setup filled with hydraulic fluid.

Also, I was thinking it over and how would you retain independent control of all four corners and still have the ability to pressurize the bottom of the actuator and lift up a tire? That'd require some fancy plumbing or 8 seperate solenoids wouldn't it?

a buddy of mine did this on the street. hydraulic cylinders with co2, all that was necessary to do was change the seals on the piston to a "booted" type seal....I can't remember the exact name for them.

it worked fine but would wear the seals out quickly. possibly due to the high psi. he was running unregulated. i'm guessing that at normal pressure levels they'll work fine.

goferit! :smokin:

edit:

just re-read your post. if you ran a 4-position solenoid at each cylinder you would then only need to run a single airline to each corner, the solenoid would control the rest including dump.

this is a bigass thread hijack btw. :D

He's using pneumatic actuators for springs, I just want to know more about them. :flipoff2:

Bringing this back from the dead...Would there be anything wrong with using a hydro cylinder for this?

uh...

wtf? i know what a fawking pneumatic actuator is.... :shaking:

you specifically asked about hydraulic cylinders used with air. and that's what i answered numbnuts. :homer:

that's what i get for answering some stupid newbie's question. :flipoff2:

You said it was a jack, I said it was still pretty on topic given his suspension setup. Clear? :flipoff2:

That looks ALOT better. Just what yor rig needed to finish it off.

On the practical side..... was powder coating in a crinkle finish covered in this thread ?

crinkle finish powder coat = Air leaks :(
