The complete plate should be rivited on the upper left corner of the fire wall (engine side). Another oblong plate, with the serial # only, should be on the outside of the left front frame horn. If they are both gone your jeep is probably registered already, somewhere.

The frame horn is the front of the side frame rails between the front crossmember and the bumper basically the piece the bumper bolts to.

What year is it supposedly? The reason I ask is the VIN is stamped in different locations depending on the year.

A Jeep that old is only going to have the serial number on one spot. A metal plate would have been attached to the engine side of the firewall on the passenger side. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it's not there anymore. I found two of them while cleaning out my toolbox from previous Jeep projects that I sold before they were completed. Check www.jeeptech.com for info to maybe help you identify the year and model. Since you're guessing that it's a '49 I'll assume that you're not that familiar with flatfenders. That site will help.

Do you even have the title for it? OR how about an old registration paper? Maybe an old insurance card? Any one of these should have something identifying it. OK, how about the license plate? The DMV should be able to tell you what you are looking for. Good Luck!
