i was reading one of my 4wheel drive and sport utility mags and they had done a special on fj40s. under brakes it says that 40s got disks in 75. i have allways been told they got disks in 76. so what year did they really get them. i know my 75 doesnt have disks

Model year was 76 but, a model year of 76 often means built in 75...so, in a sense, they are correct.

Pretty sure you are right in saying 1976 was the 1st year discs were offered on L/C's. Might have came out in late 75, but the model year would have been 76.

You want a set? I just got some pulled from an FJ-60 and they will bolt right in. Eamil me off line, we could meet 1/2 way.

~9/'75 is when they switched to discs in the US. Not sure for other markets....

The FJ60 stuff will work great but the tie rod taper on the steering arms is bigger for the FJ60 than the '75 FJ. People overcome this same problem with Mini truck disc parts swaps all the time so it's not a big deal...

You can use '80-'87 Land Cruiser rotors and any IFS calipers (thru '94 or so?) as part of the mini-truck front disc brake swap. When I did the swap on my '71 FJ40 I used '85 truck axle parts, '87 IFS calipers, and new FJ60 rotors, all bolt-on.

75 is true, because there was always to models built each year, early part of the year and the later part of the year. The late 75's had disk breaks, much like the early 68's had course spline axles and ball type axles, as the later 68's had fine spline and regular birfields.
