We where swapping a chevy 6.5 diesel into a DEFENDER with the Range Rover R204( HRC1944) 5 speed manual ( LT77 or R380 ???)and LT230 transfer case but have realized that this drivetrain will not survive the 6.5 torque.....
SO:
What can we install??
considering that we could even install an automatic if neccessary.

SM465 or a TH400. It's a bolt up and so is a NP205 box and give you the most options including doublers, KluneV etc. Keep you gears in the axle a little tall. with 33/s I would run a 3.73 so you can run down the hwy at65mph under 3k. If it's trail only then run 4.56.

I'm not really understanding why your going to run that bastard deisel when there are so many good deisel engines available over there.
