: Digital camcorder? sonyDV
If you were getting a new one what would you get? First Baby!
I am sold on Sony. I have had good luck with their products in the past etc. Worth the extra money to me for sense of security.
I am not sold on the dvd recorders, New tech scares me. I also have a dvd burner in my computer so the best feature is negated.
I would like a miniDV
What other features:
Do have and like?
Wish you had?
Have and don't use?
It is all about the money.
Right now I am considering the trv80
from infinity cameras for $780

M.Martian 01-19-2004, 10:38 PM For our company I use a Panasonic DVX100 which is a really nice camera (but sits in the $3000+ price range.
For personal use I use a JVC GR-D90. It works pretty nicely. I went with this one because it has passthrough capabilities so I can dub any source straight into the computer over the firewire port. It allows me to pass the signal through without recording it onto a MiniDV tape first. It also has a 16x zoom which isn't the norm. Most tend to have a 10x zoom.
The one feature that I don't seem to ever use on it is the still picture capabilities.

Damn well better be. We don't want any shitty cinematography in our porn.

Yeah, that Paris Hilton video sucked :(
KidJethro 01-20-2004, 05:54 AM Mine is a Sony DCR-TRV340 Digital 8...Firewire, USB etc..25X Optical zoom, 700X Digital. This thing records the best sound of any camera I've ever seen. Once upon a time my buddy took it into the shitter while he took a dump- You could hear everything  Left the lense cap on, so it's just audio. lol...anyways, I'd go with Sony just cause I love this one.
Hmm....Wonder if I still have that clip....
KidJethro 01-20-2004, 06:06 AM Yup....lol

rabid 01-20-2004, 12:05 PM we use all sony beta sp/sx gear at work (commercial production/TV studio) with the exception of our mini dv cam, a canon XL1s. Unreal camera, but 4K plus with your peripherals. It is the best DV (non-pro) camera you can buy, hands down. The sony pd150A is also nice, but has less features and a weaker lens, and in the same price range.
In the 2K range, I would go with a canon GL2 or the mid range sony. I have used both, really liked both.
The sony DV cams in the 1K range are really nice. Are they the TRV series? Check out the Canon ZR series for that money as well, although I feel the optics in the sony are better.
I would personally not buy a JVC (junk video corp), but thats just me being a spoiled snob. I have not had great luck in the past with other electronics from them, no experience with cameras.
Go to DV.com and see what people on their forums like.
I have, and will always support sony. Their gear is solid, and well warranteed.
Also, for the money, I wouldn't go digital 8, go with DV. It is a better format with more lines of resolution (cleaner picture)
rabid 01-20-2004, 12:07 PM and for the best pricing, try www.mysimon.com
If they do it for roughly the same locally, support your LOCAL camera shop. :D
Cowtowner 01-20-2004, 12:26 PM That is one heck of a price for that camcorder!!!!
Cowtowner 01-20-2004, 12:40 PM Sounds like that place is full of con artists

And

I would avoid them like the plague.
No wonder their price is 300 less than anywhere else on the web!!!!!!!
AnotherCanuck 01-20-2004, 03:58 PM Have a look at the Canon lineup. Equal in the optics, equal in the electronics, 100 times better SHOULD you have warranty issues. I bought the Elura40 last year before we had our girl and I have very few complaints...my .02
rabid 01-20-2004, 07:50 PM The elura series is a great camera for the money. I forgot to mention that.
My simon has reviews for merchants as well as products. If you are buying on like (ebay and the like) make SURE that it is not a grey market, refurb, or open box model.
New, sealed.
From a reputable dealer like www.bhphotovideo.com
They are usually more money, but they are on the level.
For a 1K range camera, circuit city, best buy, local camera shop should be similar in price.
rabid 01-20-2004, 07:55 PM abes of maine has it for 1078-

M.Martian 01-20-2004, 11:12 PM Even if you are buying from some brick and mortar "stores" be careful. Check some of the camcorder sites to find out how that store is before buying from them. There are a bunch of stores out there that offer great prices. Most of the prices are too good to be true though. Lots of gray market cameras out there.
When we were looking for equipment we were researching some of the stores. By pinging a bunch of their websites we were finding out that many of the different stores were run by the same people in the same locations.
Now we pretty much deal exclusively with B&H. We've always been very happy with their service and products.
rabid 01-21-2004, 07:58 AM ditto that. We (the company I work for) spend assloads of money at b&H, and have never had a problem.
mantis 01-21-2004, 08:20 AM I've had a SonyDV camera for just over a year, and love it. MUCH better image quality than my friends JVC DV.
I think mine was $900 or something retail, but found it for $650. Haven't had any problems with it... it's seen a lot of action too, from snow wheeling to mud, and hiking through the Costa Rica rain forest.
The stills are ok for e-mail (1 mp).
I did buy a wide angle lense for it that I rarely take off.
later,
mike.
Just ordered the TRV 80 from infinity cameras.
I will post back with the results for anyone who may want to do business with them in the future.
I have recieved an rder confermation email and will post back if they try the bait and switch when I call tomorrow. I will see if I can get I can get them to ship the camera @ the offered price.

dulce67 01-21-2004, 06:31 PM We bought a DCR-TRV17 about a year ago and its been great. Need to get some accessories for it though. I think it retailed for over $1,100 at Sears but got it on a price match for $799. I like the sound in the streaming video. Picks everything up!
Cowtowner 02-03-2004, 11:47 PM Well, did your camera ship?
