: Busted GBR (MD) 4.11s on 32" tires
DiscoDino 01-19-2004, 08:04 AM My best bud just busted a front 4.11 (Made by MD, sold to him by GBR - reverse rotation)...he was backing out of the ditch and busted it...
Little Background:
Disco with OME 2" lift, ARBs F/R, 32x9.5 ETs, a wee biton the heavy side. Driver is patient and has a steady right foot (not a flogger). The R&Ps are barely 3 months old, and they were installed correctly (by a great mechanic, was there, saw it...)...there was oil, so no overheating.
PLEASE ADVISE...
NB. No offense to Bill at GBR... the guy is great and my buddy is talking to him directly for a solution...we just wanna know what went wrong...
I have 3 pics and no red star yet...can anyone help as always? Thanks guys.
FrankenRover 01-19-2004, 08:15 AM Backing out under power was the main problem. R+P weakness is the other problem.
You will not find many blown front R+P on a LR whilst going forward. Backward you are on the wrong side of the teeth.
Also, it seems that Bill's R+P seem to be a bit on the hard side. So they last a long time (minimal wear charactersitics), but are not elastic under load and thus when the pinion deflects off of the ring gear teeth, it snaps them off.
Additionally, I am not positive, but I think Bill has his R+P's made stateside (or he did as of about 6 months ago). His axles do come from MD though.

RockRover 01-19-2004, 01:13 PM Bill...Should have been the coast side backing...
Just being picky...Whilst I procrastinate my home project! :flipoff2:

RockRover 01-19-2004, 08:34 PM More details to follow....This whole "home project" hinges on a fellow in Tuscon AZ. Without him coming through there won't be much bling...It will bling however...I just won't look like a Pro in the Rocks...
Get it? ;)

I have no clue what you are talking about ;)
Meanwhile, in this thread....
I note the gears were reverse cut. Makes it better going forward, but worse in reverse.
Any sign of the pictures?
Merv.

Are you sure the GBR 4.11 are Maxi-Drive and not from Ashcroft's in the UK? I'm not certain either way. I know Bill does some stuff from MD, but I seem to recall someone telling me they are sometimes supplemented with Ashcroft bits.
- No offense to Bill either: A) he doesn't make them and B) he has helped me out on a couple of things and is a good guy.
DiscoDino 01-21-2004, 01:22 AM UPDATE:
Bill came through after my buddy called him...he is going to courier a set of 4.11s (not reverse cut - i.e. rear set) to him from Austria ASAP.
THAT is service...after seeing the pics, Bill believed of some manufacturing issue...DEFENITELY not a heavy right foot!
Thanks once again guys...
Oh, and for the hi-jackers: :flipoff2:

Ok, so its not a Maxi Drive CWP, as they come from Australia.

DiscoDino 01-22-2004, 05:15 AM Rick...
I know where they come from, (and if your mentionning my spelling of the name, then :flipoff2: to you too!)
Its just confusing what GBR sells that's made in the USofA versus AUST ( ;) )
