What kind of riding do you plan on doing? If you aren't going out hard core mountian bike riding just hit a local bike shop they can hook you up for about $300-400. Go to a shop and get a bike fit to you, you will be much happier then buying a bike that was set up for someone else.

I've got a 2004 Jamis Komodo FX that I need to sell.
$575 + Shipping.
This bike is brand new less than 10 miles on it, never even been on dirt. Perfect condition. The only thing different than a store spec is that I have a different wheel set than what came from the factory on it. I put on Alex double wide rims with 36 spoke 4x laced. Super beef wheelset. Bike retails for around $800.

Forgot to mention, it's a 17" frame. I'm 5' 9" or so and it had a pretty good feel size wise for me.

First,
Unload that old bike. There are programs that will take it, and you get a receipt for a tax deduction. If you want to sell it, don't expect much, they aren't worth their weight in scrap. Bikes are a terrible investment, they only lose value, so you had better get your money's worth in 'fun'.
About buying a new bike. First figure out what kind of riding interests you. Personally I like to ride street, with some DH and an occasional epic ride (40 miles plus, in an evening) My riding taste depends on my mood. I have a singlespeed, a 'freeride' hardtail, a DH bike, and a BMX bike for those sessions at the skate park or if I feel like crashing my brains out at the dirtjumps.
Set yourself a budget, ~$500 will get you a pretty nice bike nowadays, cheaper will be compromising a lot of fuctionality, and durability. Obviously you can't touch anything custom, or super light weight, unless you expand your budget quite a bit. Go to your local bike shop, one with a good reputation, and talk to someone there, particularly someone that is into the same kind of riding you are. (don't talk to a roadie about DH bikes, stuff like that, and don't be afraid to ask what kind of riding he/she does) Have them take your measurements, and have the bike fitted for you before you leave the store. Ask questions about recalls on the components or the bike overall, sometimes there are troublesome parts or manufacturers, and you will want to avoid them if possible. Make sure that the shop offers tune up service, the shops I have bought all of my bikes from offer lifetime tuneups, but I like to work on my own stuff, and have built up my last several bikes, experience has taught me which parts and pieces feel good, and I have only myself to blame for any malfunctions. Make sure it is comfortable and fun to ride, otherwise you have expensive garage art. Good luck and enjoy!
