: Maxi Drive Crawler gear installed
Troutrover 01-19-2004, 03:38 PM For anyone interested, here are some pics before and after the install of my Maxi Drive Crawler Gear. I put it in a 1.667 T-case so I will have a lower high range than the normal 1.4 that came in the NAS D90's.

TuffRR 01-19-2004, 03:56 PM mmmm....straight cut gears. :D
Not sure if you have driven it yet, but don't be put off by the loudness of the transfer case in low range. It does get (slightly) better after a while. Either that or I'm just used to it now.
Troutrover 01-19-2004, 04:02 PM After
Troutrover 01-19-2004, 04:08 PM And last but not least, the whole kit.
Troutrover 01-19-2004, 04:12 PM I have not driven it but I have heard the straigh cut gears are a bit louder than stock. Guess I willl just have to drowned it out with a Flowmaster :D
64rovr 01-19-2004, 06:03 PM How much $$? Looks like a nice kit.

Mal sells them here for about $1800AUD - about $1400USD but I'm sure they cost more once landed in the US.
SeaRover 01-19-2004, 09:00 PM that is a lot of coin for gears, but I always like to point out that, IMO, the 4.0 LT230 is about the same price as an atlas, and a helluva lot better option to remain "stock" ;) we have to flaunt what we got, and the t-case is at least one component where LR didn't completely screw the pooch, and can lay some claim to engineering excellence over our usual domestic competition.
good work
now trout' - when are we going to see a rover SD1 in your driveway??
:flipoff2:
wilsby 01-20-2004, 02:23 AM Considering the same. What was the tap and plug for? And what else was involved in the installation?
Troutrover 01-20-2004, 10:48 AM You have to drill and tap a new hole for the drain plug as the new gear would rub on the old plug. Grind away a little of the case in a few spots, just a few mm, to allow the larger low range gear to clear. You also have to take a little off the side of the sector shaft as the gear would rub there as, well. The whole kit is a real master piece by Mal. He has increased the size of the lowrange gear to the max without having to give up any structural strength of the case or other parts.
Is that the 30 or 40% reduction kit? (does the 30% reduction require modding the casing or just the 40% kit?)
Troutrover 01-20-2004, 12:03 PM It is the 30% and only requires a little bit of filing and grinding to the case, nothing structural. After having installed this kit (30%) I don't see how you could put any larger gear (40%) without sacrificing the strength of the case. There just isn't any more room!

JEEPEYTR 01-23-2004, 11:17 AM Nice Conversion, its on my wish list. Just a note, NAS D90’s came with 1.22:1 high ranges (Disco's and Rangies as well), NAS D110’s with 1.41:1 high range. Enjoy the new gears!
FrankenRover 01-23-2004, 12:09 PM Not exactly true. Some early '94 NAS D90's have 1.4 boxes. Which explains why some guys trucks are faster than other guys!
