First, I have an 89 Ranger and have cut the frame at the engine crossmember. I used square tubing to build it the framae and the cross member back. I built a hole new engine cross member. I am putting the coil towers half way between the crossmember and the end of the frame. There will be a cross member at the coil towers and a hoop connecting them over the engine. I also have welded tubing across at the end of the frame. THere wil also be a cross member behind the motor for radius arm and skid plate support. All this being said should I keep the engine cross member or should I chop the center out. I have had two people bring up questions about whether the engine cross member will bind and brake under frame flex/strain and engine torque. I know jeeps don't have cross member connecting their motor mounts. Here are some pics of what I am tallking about to clear up any confusion.

What is that, 2x2" tubing?

I personally don't see any structural issues with your crossmember, it looks like you've got plenty of gusseting at the ends.

Where I think you're gonna have issues is where the new front section is welded to the original frame. Ranger frames (or any open C frame, for that matter) is gonna flex a lot and cracking around the welds may occur.

Since you went this far, how about going all the way back to the rear cab mounts (or beyond) with the 2x6 (or whatever you're using)?

Time and money are a couple of reasons why I am not building an all new frame. Besides if I go through that much trouble I might as well tube it out. The engine cross member is 2x2- 1/4" and the frame rails are 2x4. I have thought about the rigid frame mated to a flexing frame. I am putting an external cage and internal. THese will be tied to the frame. I am also taking the bed off and flat bedding it and running the exo all the way back. With all the cage support and such, I believe I will greatly reduce frame flex. Only time will tel. Thanks for the input.

I'm very interested in hearing how this turns out for you. I'm getting ready to do the same thing to a full-size Bronco.

I will be running a 5.0. Actually that tire is for someone else. :D I didn't even notice it was in the picture. I am not brave enough to run 49's on one tons. I am waiting on the 42" Irocks to come out.
