Has anyone done this? I'm considering it rather than buying an extra tank and mounting it. I have the Confer type tube bumpers front and rear with the sealed ends (not the crappy chrome POS with plastic caps!). From what i've heard the wall thickness is good enough for the purpose, and it looks like i could get as much as 5 gallons by linking them up.

You could drill and tap the bumper tubing, but I doubt the tubing wall is think enough to actually hold the threads. So I would drill and tap the bumper tube for a 3/4" pipe, then use a 3/4" x 3/8" pipe bushing (black pipe), after threading the bushing into the bumper tube, weld the bushing to the tube basically making a threaded bung to connect yer air line fittings. Don't forget to do something for a drain to release the condensation from the bumper tube.

been there, done exactly that... :D
I tapped my Confer bumper years ago and it was a gread mod. I initally tapped it in 4 places then added another when I added a 2nd compressor. First, I tapped the upper tube in 3 places and the bottom in 1. 1st top was the input from the compressor, 2nd top was for output (tapped b/t hoop for protection), 3rd top was for the jumper to the bottom to make the two tubes one tank. Just used standard fittings from Home Depot. I did discover two pinhole size leaks from the caps but put some JB weld on them and never had a leak again (at least 5 years).
get to work.... :D

Thats what i had in mind. However i'm also going to do the rear one too. I will end up with loads of volume, and a quick connect at each end (currently have one connect under the rear light).
Right now i have a Quickair and an ARB linked together, but i will be either converting my Sanden, or adding a York. Should end up being a good setup!
