Hey,

My bud's got a line on a winch. he called the ad and the guy described it....8,000 lb, motor above, spur gear, 150' of cable, says it's a "70's", but he just put one of the new motors in it. He din't know or remember the model #.

The question is...I thought I remember hearing about a winch that was similar to the 8274, perhaps it's predecessor. What year was the first 8274 made? What would be the model of the predecessor? What do you know about it? Any problems with it?

Other than beating my buddy over the head with it (out of jealousy) I thought I'd help him out a bit since he's stuck on a 31k connection until Monday (oh god......no, not 31k) :D.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Charl

I think '74 was the first year.

I think the predecessor was the 8200, there may also have been a 8270?

I have one of those earlier Warn winches. Was called a Warn-Belleview. 8000# capacity with the motor above like the 8274. last year of production was '73. No free spooling out. No remote switch. pull cables controll the winch from inside the cab. stout enough but not as user friendly as the 8274.

Charly,

What's a used 8274 go for down there?

'round here I saw one for $1000 cdn ($640 US) and another for $600 Cdn but with no cable or solenoids.

Damn!

I have an 8074 that was built in 1976. It is EXACTLY the same as an 8274 but I don't have freespool. It is a great winch. These winches are fast enough that you don't need freespool, unless you are having another vehicle pull the cable...

yeah, I bought it.

It is a Warn series 8000. Has a cable controlled system to it, and it is very similar to the 8274, but it doesn't use a solenoid or a remote switch.

So now that I have it and am going to be using it, who knows what about it? Does warn provide support for something this old? They are closed for the holidays (bastards) so I can't even get things rolling. And of course, there is a serious lack of internet stuff on something 30 years old.

But, for $200....... with a newly rebuilt electric motor, I couldn't pass it up.

So, any old timers have any tech info on this winch?

Thanx

I have two of these.

One is an M8000 warn. Yes they called it an M8000 even though it is just like an 8274.

The other is a Bellview 6000 pound winch with a Land Rover plate on it. Of course it is the same as the M8000 but the story I got was that warn tested it and thought it would be good enough as an 8000 so thats what they changed it to. As I understand it some M6000 warns were made. both of mine are OLD, say early 60s on the bellview and late 60s on the warn.

If you call warn they will send you for free a repair manual, and parts diagram for the winches.

I have not used either of mine (I have nine winches) no freespool?

I thought it was no power out? One of mine does not freespool but I though the drum was siezed.

I've been using one for a couple of years now. I really like it. Very primitive. It runs fast like a 8274. Warn gave me a number for a company that sells parts for these winches. I don't think that Warn still stocks parts for them. Here's a picture of mine on my truck last year. Is this the type of winch that you bought?

yeah, it has the same big lever thingy (sorry so technical) on it as on your Yoda.

Would you happen to have some good pix of the cable setup on the side, and of the brake lever area? I would like to see how that is setup. Do you remember the name or number of the company Warn told you to talk to? That would be helpful :p

Was Warn able to provide you with a manual and repair diagrams/part numbers and such. I am sure I will need all of that in my adventures.

Thanx
