: Strength Of 5.13 Gears???
Boston Mangler 12-27-2001, 09:29 PM Hey Guys
If all goes as planned i will be picking up my front D44 this weekend for the YJ and will begin builing it as my winter project immediately!
My question is about 5.13 gears. I always hear that 4.88's are supposedly weak because of the small pinion but i never hear anything mentioned about the 5.13's. I would assume that the 5.13's would be even weaker? This right?
Axles are a d44 front and a rear ford 8.8
I run a 2.5L and currently 33's. But i eventually be going to 36's or 37's most likely by mid summer!
Anyones thoughts on this?
Anyone run 5.13's??
Thanks
The Rockslut 12-27-2001, 10:51 PM I assume you are talking about a reverse cut 44? The reverse cut gears are stronger in the front anyways. Now when it comes to 5.13 gears dont worry about the gears and focus on the joints. Even the four cyl with 36 or 37" tires wont have any problem busting joints.

No, i am talking about a regular 44 front a Waggy
Thanks
RockHound 12-28-2001, 11:01 AM I am currently running 5.38s in My wrangler with f/r 44s on 36 sx tires pushed by a 5.0. I was a little worried about going to that small of a pinion but since I am running the AOD trans I figured I would at least be able to use OD. So The 5.13s Should not be a problem.
Hope this helps
JEEPRZ 12-28-2001, 11:43 AM You shouldnt have a problem. SOme of the BS about weak small pinions is just that...BS
kwrangln 12-28-2001, 12:19 PM Skip the 5.13's, go for the 5.38's, you'll be glad you did. I run the 4 cyl, ax5, 44's f/r with 5.38's, and 33's. Been that way for 5 years now, about 80k miles, and lots o trails with no probs. 35's are on the way, I'll finally be able to do over 70 mph, woohhhooo!!!!. 5.13's would be perfect for 33's, 5.38's will be perfect for 35-36's.
Boston Mangler 12-28-2001, 12:30 PM yes but no one makes 5.38's for the Ford 8.8 rear
thanks
G.C. Bandit 12-28-2001, 01:41 PM DONT EVEN WORRY ABOUT IT!!!

RoCkSkuLLz 12-30-2001, 10:29 PM im running precision 5.13 gears in my front waggy 44 and its held up fine. I think Rockslut is right, worry about the joints, the gears should be fine. BTW: The reason I went 5.13's was because Im running a 8.8 in the rear too and as you know thats as low of gearing as it gets. :D

Yeah yeah yeah, but Im confused, why such low gearing in a vehicle that just sees the mall speedbumps? Oh thats right, You may need it for those bigger bumps :D :flipoff2: Just kiddin yo!
Scott :grinpimp:<><
BM--- ZUK here is running dana 44's front and rear in my other daily driver(92 Yota flatbed) and Detroits and 5.89 gears....no strength issues even with 36" TSL's.... 5.13's will be even a bit stronger. go for it....get a professional to set em up though.

mfg4rox 12-31-2001, 06:59 PM Oh, I'll tell you why it doesn't see much off-road use....for starters there is the ol' 35 out back. Oh, and how could I forget, its fresh outa da shop.
:flipoff2:
Kensoffroad 12-31-2001, 11:44 PM I used to run 5.29s in an otherwise stock drive train toyota with 38.5s and detroits and never had any trouble but at first i tried 5.71s and went through a few sets of those before i dropped down to the 5.29s

Don't even start with me! :flipoff2: you and I both know that Ive beat the D35 hard. In fact, seems to me, I remember you being the one taking all the bypasses the last time out.. way to use that beefy D44 you got

Comedy scott. You sure did beat that 35 hard dude. Everyone knows that if you beat a 35 hard, it breaks, Period. Therefor, you were feather footin' the ol' gas pedal, cuz your piece lofted away intact from that trip. May be next time you might get the balls enough to give that spring under wounder a little gas.:flipoff2:
bigdude 01-03-2002, 04:25 AM Strictly because I have the same motor, 8.8 rear, and run 36's, I say get 5.13. I have 4.88 because of the dana 30 front (60's being built) and sometimes wish I had a little lower gear. I don't think our motors have the balls to strip a ring gear or snap a pinion, but man it'll definitely bust U-Joints (I carry two sets of front axles ready to go) no problem. I'm not complaining about 4.88, I've never needed more, either way it'll be fine.
