: Is it wrong to take a stray dog to the shelter?
obex26 01-23-2004, 08:54 AM On the way to work about 5 am I saw a small dog running around major street with no tags. It was friendly enough put it in the car and dropped it off at the shelter this morn on way to work since it did not have tags. Granted the shelter is about 10 miles from where I found the dog I kind of feel bad because I don't know if the owner will find it, but at the same time I didn't want it to get hit by a passing car since it was still dark out and the dog is completely black. It was some kind of Mix. I would have kept it and posted notices in the area if I had a place to keep the dog but I don't. Now I kind of wonder what will happen to the dog even though it is a no kill shelter.
deadmeat 01-23-2004, 08:56 AM You saved it from becomming road pizza and took better care of it than who owns it.
I say you did right.
ROCKDOG4X4 01-23-2004, 08:58 AM It'll get "adopted" by a Chinese restaurant. Dark-furred dogs taste just like duck.
Moose 01-23-2004, 08:59 AM Some dogs ahve Avid chips in thier necks, at least they will scan for that, if not hopefully it will get a home better then the one he ran from. Also, the shelter should be the first place the owner calls
Dieselmh 01-23-2004, 09:00 AM Around here, there are usually three fates for strays. They either get run over, shot, or taken to the pound. I'd say you did OK.
mudmaid 01-23-2004, 09:01 AM :( here's what you can do, put an ad in the paper saying when/where you found the dog, what he/she looks like and where the dog is now.
this shelter is a no kill shelter?
obex26 01-23-2004, 09:03 AM where I live most of these people would not know that this specific shelter exists. Hopefully they check with a local vet there are about 13 in a 5 mile radius from where I live and found it.
Yea the shelter is a no kill, when i was 11 I got my german shepard from them he was about 2 at the time had him for 3 years and had to put him to sleep something about stomach twisted :( I havent owned a dog since.
I am off to buy new fish tonight:) Since I had ick wipe out my entire tank cept for my oldest fish (23 yr pleco) and a catfish.
Schly 01-23-2004, 09:07 AM 1. The owner should call or visit the shelter ASAP when they realize their dog is missing.
2. The ad's in the paper for lost/found pets and articles are usually free so you should do it.
3. You can sign up to adopt the dog yourself in case it gets to the point where it's about to take the big sleep and the owners haven't found it.
4. You did exactly the right thing. That's what the shelter is there for.
Joe_W 01-23-2004, 09:32 AM Did the right thing... for you!
criscfer 01-23-2004, 09:35 AM Hard as it is, you did the right thing.
We found a stray while spending a week in a cabin at Koke'e State Park. Kaua`i has many wild chickens, and this dog had been surviving on them. Still she was malnurished, just skin and bones with ribs poking out.
One rooster had made a point to disturb my sleep every morning. Our newly adopted friend took his ass out the first morning I let her out.:D
At the end of the week we reluctantly took her to the pound. It was hard to do, but leaving a starving animal to forage in the wild would have been much crueler.:(
Rubicrawler 01-23-2004, 09:47 AM Under the circumstances, you did the right thing! Chances are it would have been hit if you didn't act. Good job!

You did the right thing. If the owners are good ppl and love the dog they will check with the shelter. If they don't give a fawk the dog will be adopted out to someone.
Wow that must be some fish set up you have. Right now we have 2 bluegill. VERY low maintenance lol.
supaphat 01-23-2004, 11:28 AM A 25 cent bullet would have saved a few taxpayer dollars.

Sure, but then you'll have to dispose of the carcass. If you splatter them, the birds will do the rest.
obex26 01-23-2004, 12:11 PM supaphat why dont you go have a a "hey guys watch this" and come back and tell us about it; it will be like the enquirer but only on the PBB.
And for your first stunt try seeing if you can catch a .22 in your teeth from a range of 20 feet. All the while using kite string tied to the trigger passed through a few eyehooks and tied to your pinky toe. Make sure you get it on video too.
