too hideous

My 78 Bronco steering is pretty sloppy due to severly worn tie rod ends. The steering box and column are fresh though. So I'm looking at OEM replacement parts and that burns up a $200 bill real fast. So then I look into it some and realize that there are some nice functional mods out there that make a lot of sense (what the hell, why not burn 2 $200 bills right?). The extra strength and higher clearance of mounting the rods over the knuckles is appealing.
So here's my quandry:
Do I go with a heim joint setup? They seem pretty cool, and easy enough to work with (no reamers necessary). But in my experience, heims tend to loosen up and rattle like a box of chicklets.
Or do I go with a GM rod end setup, bite the bullet and get the tools I need? This sounds like the way to go, but does anyone have the specifics for what I need and where to get the tools?
I need GM PN for the rod ends, some heads up info on how to position everything, where to buy LR and RH taps, plus the reamer.
Thanks
