: fj60 rdb...make the parking brake work...?
So, if you use the eldorado calipers, with the e-brake provision, can one make thefj60's factory ebrake handle actuate the eldo calipers e-brake function...? Can someone swage new ends on my existing cable, make a custom cable, or...? Thanks, Alan
Jason M 01-23-2004, 06:26 PM Yes you can.
You might need a custom cable tho.
There is no reason why the stock E brake lever will not work.
Unfortunately I think you will be dissapointed with the E brake portion.
Most of the people that I know that have done the conversion have not been happy with the e brake.
Something to do with a 5000lb vehicle instead of a 2500lb vehicle...
Any cable place in your town shoudl be able to make you a custom cable.
smtyblt 01-23-2004, 06:29 PM call TSM they have everything you need.

heard the same thing...also heard that if the eldo's are WELL maintained, they will work adequate, but never as good as the stock drums on the 60.
I'm considering them on my rig tho....gotta have something, and not a fan of the stock t-case drum on the 40.
Cruzzr 01-23-2004, 06:51 PM Well, I am running the eldorado cali. I bought the set up from http://www.tsmmfg.com/2491.htm
You can buy the whole ebrake set up from control cables......
I just did a search on their site and they have taken off the file you need. They have this excellent 3 page document that explains exactly what they need from you. It shows how to take the measurements for the cables and then you just pick the set up you want. It even has a diagram of how they all connect. Like I said, they have the foot push kind and the lever kind. I highly recommend you get the foot push. http://stores.skipjack.com/controlcables/Search.bok?start=1&total=11&searchpath=436011fcfa456089d73b&category=Street+Rod+Products%3ABrake+Levers+%26+Ha rdware This link has the pedals....once you get this document I am talking about it will be VERY clear how this works.
Having said all that.....I bought just the hardware from these guys. Bolted it all up.....took their instructions on how to get the cable measurements...then went and parked at a company local that makes cables on the spot and measured it up. They built the cables and then I bolted it up. They made it a little long so I unbolted ands they fixed it on the spot. I drove home with ebrakes. They are off of Irving Blvd in Irving. The cables are standard cables so there is nothing hybrid about the set up. Feel free to call me to discuss finer details

Soooooo
How well does the E brake hold?
How steep of a hill?

Well, my current hand brake holds until you give it gas.....haven't tried a hill. I can let off the gas and pull the lever and it will come to a stop. I will be changing it out to the foot brake though as soon as I get the cash. I know a guy that has it and it holds just like the chevy does. Very well. Granted it is a noticeable difference from the drum. Obviously the lock out would be the ideal set up.
What's funny to me on this whole issue is....the two sanctioned inspections I have gone through no one every checked or even crawled into the cab. All they checked was ujoints, ARB lockers, and front end.
sixty 01-23-2004, 08:01 PM I used my stock fj60 cable, cut it & then used the stock caddy cables & cut them. instead of swages I bough 3/8" fine thread bolts & drilled holes thru them to make adjustable stops.
I then used the method that I had seen posted a long time ago on the LCML. I had a link in a prior thread here but the link is dead now. I can snap a pic if someone wants to host/post it. cost was about $40 for the 2 caddy cables & bolts & steel
at first the e-brake barely worked so I was going to develop some sort of cam to double the pressure but after a few thousand miles the e-brake works ALOT better. it wont lock up the tires at speed but deffinately slows things down. it doesn't have much trouble holding my big fat 60 either on a hill even in gear w/ my 700r4. I like it now.
now if only I could increase my rear braking pressure i would be happy. I still can't lock up the 35's while w/ the montecarlo's I had no problem. I would probably go w/ the early larger style if I could do it again

Snap a pic or three, email them to woody@ih8mud.com....I'll post it up.
sixty 01-23-2004, 08:28 PM you got mail..... It looks a little jerry rigged but it was easy & cheap. at the time I did not have a welder & just needed it to pass inspection so as you can tell it was pretty sloppy. I have't had time to go back & clean it up pretty much cause I've had no trouble.
I still need to fix a brake leak @ the prop valve (thanks Mace for your shoddy double flare ;) ) & figure out how to get more pressure to the calipers... then I will be happy w/ these calipers.
as a side point, w/ the eldorado calipers you really do not need a prop valve w/ an fj60
Cable makers...? In my little 100,000 pop town...? Ha! I laugh out loud now:) Laugh Laugh! I do see "Part No. 3111 Short Cable Extensions $20.00pr" at the tsm fj60 rdb listing, maybe those attach to the stock cables and make them work...Someone, somewhere, mentioned "grinding down the stops" on the eldo calipers to get better ebraking...?

Interesting...that's 60 cable up front, and short eldo jumpers to an equalizer? The control cable site has several pre-fabbed equalizers...
wngrog 01-24-2004, 08:20 AM Is the question about leverage or is it about the Eldorado Calipers being crappy?
I am about to use an Eldorado Caliper to make a cutting/emergency brake on the rear pinion of my mog axle.
I am planning on using a stock FJ-60 hand brake handle.
Is the caliper weak or is it the leverage you can get on the long cable?
Sup?

It's all about the lever. You can't pull hard enough to do what the brake was intended to do. The caliper is a single piston too. If you want to use the toyota dual piston you can have Gary make the bracket. It is the same design as the eldorado. With your added strength in the driveline and bigger tires I would highly consider the dual piston and a foot brake.
If you would tell me the next time (this weekend) you are going to be at Ed's I'll swing by and let you check out my setup before you get into yours.

What Toyota Disc Brake caliper has an emergency brake built into it?
FZJ-80?
