I'm looking for info about an 8.8 swap into my YJ. I was planning on 1 ton stuff front and rear with coilovers and such but the money I had planned to use for that had to be used for other things. So my question is, what model Ford Explorer came with 4.10 gears? I know I need a '97 or newer to get the discs and bigger axleshafts, but I dont know what to look for at a junkyard to find one with 4.10s. Any help?

95 or newer, and you just have to look around. The 4.10 gears are not as common as the 3.73, so you just have to get out there and look.

on the axle it should have an info tag that has what it came off of and what ratio. The two 8.8s my friend and i have bought have both been 4.10s(off a 96 and 98)

think only on the sport, and only with an open differential, had 4.10's.

So I'm looking for a 6 cylinder sport model....Auto or manual or does it matter? I've heard from some sources that 4.10s were the towing package. Is this info correct?

And it is 95 or newer on the Explorers for 31 splines and discs.

There is false info circulating about 97 and newer, that I think can be traced to an ORC write up that still contains the false info.

Good Luck.

I'll have one for sale in a couple months that has 4.88s and an ARB (new style).

I think you want a v8 model (31 spline disc brakes) also, I got mine with 3.73, but I had a lighting carrier with 4.10 and I just swap the carriers. If you look at the tag on the rear axle just pay attention to the bottom line the ratio is the first couple of numbers, if it is a 4.10 with the semi-locker the code would be "4SL10" if 4.10 and open "4 10" if a 3.73 then "3 73" You know what I mean??

good luck

well...just to clear it up...95+ have discs...but all explorer rear ends have 31 splines. Mines a 92 and i have 31. I counted. oh yeah..and the sport never came with a v8....just fyi

im not sure wether or not manual or stick matters. about the towing package, i think it varies. ii have the towing package on mine, and all that consisted of was a limited slip rear end, 3.73 gears, and a tranny cooler.

mines a 2000 with 4.0 v-6 auto 4x4 , and 4.10 was told the 4.10 was more common with v6

G-Vegas = Greenville (East Carolina University)

I've been looking around and I found a few for $350. I've been doing some thinking and it really doesnt matter what ratio is in it because I think I'm going to go to 4.88s for the swap. Unless I can find a good front axle donor that I can put 5.13s in ;)

Cool If you don't have the means I can hook you up with a guy in Cary who does gears for 150 an axle.
Maybe a waggy D44 front can do 5:13's never messed with one.
