My kids got me the stock brackets to mount a York compressor in my '79 CJ for Christmas and I went about installing the thing when I noticed that the alternator pulley doesn't line up with a damn thing. I mapped out a few possible routes for the belts but it seems that the alternator must ultimately be turned by one of the pulleys from the York compressor, but they don't line up. It seems as though the alternator pulley sticks out way too far. Any thoughts out there? Anyone got a '79 258ci. engine with the stock York AC? If so could ya get me a photo?

Have you looked at www.onboardair.com ? I would recommend replacing the alternator pulley with a dual pulley and attaching the york directly to the alternator.

Kilby will have your answer. If nothing else you could re-drill your base plate for the york so that it lines up properly.

My guess would be that you have the wrong pulley set up on your york, there are several different setups that came with the different York applications, The double pulley will work the best on most applications since you have two options on where to run the belt.

the 258 when equipped with york ac uses a differnt alt bracket.

you might be able to space it out correctly with a longer bolt and some washers)

its hard to find those 258 york brackets, I jumped up and down when I found a set in teh junkyard, then realized the alt bracket was gone.

Hey, you guys did your homework too. I've got the stock alternator bracket and the idler pulleys and everything from JW dismantlers in Antelope CA. I went to my favorite parts dealer (Monument Car Parts in Antioch) and bought the stock belts thinking that would give me an idea where stuff went. It worked, I had to change the pulley size on the compressor. I had an extra from my last donor vehicle. The issue now is still the alternator. It wants to run from the crankshaft pulleys. Is anyone out there running 3 pulleys on their crankshaft? This seems like a good idea, if one of the AC belts fail the alternator will still be OK. Let me know.

On my 6cyl with York, the compressor has a double pulley, with 2 different diameters. One belt runs the w/p and p/s. A second belt runs the larger pulley on the compressor, and off the idler on the head. A third belt runs off the smaller comp pulley, and the alt
