I have a chevy 14 bolt full floater gov-loc (chevy’s limited slip) rear end. I’ve read about a technique of welding only the valleys of the spider gears in a certain sequence creating a permanent locker without destroying everything by welding it all together.
My question is that I understand you have to have an open carrier for a detroit locker for example but does it matter what kind of carrier you have when it comes to just welding it up? I opened it up and it doesn’t appear that any of the components will interfere.

Weld it up just like an open diff.
If you want specifics do a search, there is a ton of info around on it. Even some specific to Govlocks
I have also herd bad things about welding only the valleys.

since u cant piut the detroit in the gov lock case, u migth as well just burn everything together, the more welds the better, not like ull be ruining anything good

Like it was stated, the Gov Loc carrier is really good for nothing (except for a welded carrier). Go ahead and weld everything you can weld...and then weld some more. I broke my welded up gov loc when only the spiders were welded (with 40" swampers). I had to completely gut the gov loc and cut the side gears into hexagonal shapes. Then added steel blocks to fill in the gaps and welded- heavily. Haven't had a problem since then and we use the truck hard enough to break D60 parts.

It's gov lock, it sucks, weld away the more the better. just becarefull not to get any splatter in the splins where your axles slid in and wipe away all excess splatter real good before reassembly or something will get chewed.
