I have a 73 fj40 and am looking for a similar rear spring as stock but aobut 2 inches longer. Any suggestions?

not entirely sure, but maybe FJ55 springs?

Take a look around - see if you see something that fit your needs...

If I can help - just ask

I think 55 springs are 3 inches longer, and the wagoneer springs are just a little smaller than that.

If your looking for somthing close to waht you have, then try the FJ55 springs (3" longer), or if your not too heavy, go with wrangler springs (I think most cruisers are too heavy for these), but some people run them. If you do go with the Wrangler springs, you'll need to put add-a-leafs in them because they are way to soft otherwise.

If your just looking to push the rear axle back an 1" or so try stock FJ40 front springs minus 1 or 2 leafs... the center pins are pushed back an 1" to 1.5 ??? from the rear leaf center pin location and you don't have to swap the military wrap.

on 69cruzer's rig we ran wagoneer front springs in the rear of his fj40. it moved the axle back a bit (just as much as a spring rev) and we used the shackle hanger in the stock position and ran a longer shackle kicked back at a bit more than 45 degrees. nice and soft and flexy and then and then ,and then, and then, and then,.....

its getting late

Well I took my stock front springs, took the first 2 leafs off of them and installed them on my rear axle.....low and behold the rear axle moved back about an 1" to an 1.5" (I had to get the rear driveshaft lengthend 1.5" to get it back in the sweet spot) my tire is centered perfectly in the well stuffed and a friend whos doin retail told me that the front center pin location is different than the rear center pin location.....you do the math. It worked out sweet cuz I can stuff the rear and fit!! I didn't change the direction of any leafs and the wrap is still forward on the solid spring mount. I haven't gotten around to measuring the center pin difference between front and rear but here is visual proof:
Before:

After: next post...
I converted from spring under to spring over , and thats the only thing I can attribute to the gain in length..

I've pulled apart more leaf spring packs from more FJ40 Cruisers than I care to remember. The eye to pin distances on every one has been identical, front or rear, regardless of year. (those tested thus far include 1969, 1972, 1974, 1977, 1976, 1979, 1980, and 1978) I have witnessed differences in spring design (straight cut ends versus taper) and in leaf quantities (6 or 7).

Converting from SUA to SOA, because the axle center moves ~6" DOWN, is what caused your drive shaft to be 1 - 1.5" different.

Id have to agree with Sixgun on this one. I recently swapped my springs around. This was after it was already SOA. I did relocate the rear hangar about 1.5" back but that was before the swap too. Before the swap it was a 91.5" WB...after it was 100". The fronts are stock springs with a shackel reversal and the rear is Procomp POS 2.5"s.

Let me get this straight.. did you do the shackel reversal on the front at the same time as you did the SO? So by flipping the
springs you got around 8.5" of extended wheelbase????? Did you move the original spring hanger on the frame too?

Ok let me try to explain a little more.

When I first got the cruiser it was SOA with a shackle reversal. The WB at that time was 90". I then made new rear spring hangers which moved the rear axle back another 1.5" for a total of 91.5" WB.

Just recently I decided to swap my springs around( wanted better approach angle and a longer WB for verticle climbs). The distance from the spring eye to center pin is offset on the stock set of fj40 springs and the aftermarket POS ProComp 2.5" lift ones I have in the rear. After doing this I ended up with a WB of 100" and I did nothing else than just spin the springs around.

Okay, I get it now. Of course did you flip the military wrap around so that it is attached to the frame mount? IF you haven't I strongly suggest you do...

No need to . This is a offroad only rig..If it ever sees the road again it will be lucky and so will I. Lucky that the cops didnt give me every ticket they could think of with fullwidth 1ton axles,42s,beadlocks and no fenders!!

Interesting observation Woody, just in my stockpile of Cruiser Springs I have 19 1/2" front stock ones on the rear. 20 1/2" Ranchos, 23 1/2" Pinnacles, I don't have a stock Rear Cruiser spring so I can't measure that. All measurements were taken from the center of the solid mounted spring bushing bolt to the center of the leaf center pin.
I only gained an 1" of lift from my SUA to SOA conversion, But I see what your saying about the center pin location being different from a lifted (arched) spring, to a flat spring I just don't think I would gain an 1.5" from flattening a leaf, especially from the solid mount side. Can someone post a short side measurement from bushing center to center pin measurement for a stock rear Cruiser spring? Obviously lifted springs are longer and therin might lie the answer to Brody's question.

what if you used only the main leaf that was lifted and the others out of say a stock leaf. you could remain relatively flat and still use the lenght to your advantage

Hey brzr, I highly reccomend having the military wrap on the frame side vs. the shackle side. It has nothing to do with on road or of road. it is a strength issue. I have broken springs because of the military wrap being in the wrong place.
