: High Impact Plastics

I'm looking for a plastic that can take high impacts, i.e. skidplate applications. From the McMaster Carr webiste I have come up with the following choices and their impact strength in ft-lbs/in as found by the nothced Izod test .

UHME Preimium - 30.0
UHME Standard - Unbreakable
LDPE - Unbreakable

Any other I should look at. Anyone have any expirence with these or others?

Use whatever they make cutting boards out of, that shit is strong and a little flexy too.

i think most cutting boards are delrin (acetal)

can you tell us all why you want to use plastic? it seems like it would gouge and stick rather than slide over rocks, kinda like aluminum

Well the main use is for my rockers. I building some one off rails and was thinking of stuff somekind of plastic in them to keep them from crushing and to spread the load.

Also I'm going to use it for a underbody skid.

The stuff above is very slick. Poor man Teflon. Rocks will slide over no problem. I just don't want to punching holes in them.

Cutting borads are made I bleive of what is listed above. Delrin is not used for cutting boards and super spendy.

plastic works great for skids (the right kind anyways)

we used a sheet of that white stuff cutting boards are made of..you can high center a buggy on a rock and push it off with two guys

pretty sure its delrin

what's wrong with HDPE?

I WOULD GO WITH HDPE (HIGH DENSITY POLY ETHALENE) ITS CHEAP AND SLIPPERY TOO

It could be Delrin Austin but to give you an idea of price a 2'x2'x.5" sheet costs 140 bucks! So that rules it out for me.

I was looking at HDPE but it has a relativly low impact strenght of 2 ft-lbs/in comapred to the ones listed above.

From looking at mcmaster

a .5" thick sheet of 24" x 48" delrin is $233:eek:

a .5" thick sheet of 48" x 48" hdpe is $75

tensile strength of the delrin is 10000psi
tensile strength of the hdpe is 4000psi

both have an impact strength of 2.3ft.lbs/inch (is this good or bad, sounds low?)

Thats what I would recommend, Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. Its slippery and strong......... and FDA compliant. So if you don't end up using it for skids, you could have the worlds largest cutting board.

yeah that stuff on cambells buggy, we have used it for years and years with good luck...wears out but only if you use it alot:D

its good though cause you can use an alluminum skid, then coat it with that to be slickery. 3/8 is plenty if you keep it mounted solid

good to know3/8" will work. I was thinking that a skeleton of small tubing would make the main skid then coat it with the plastic.

you fawkers must not have skated when "rails" were popular on boards.... you losers:rolleyes:

Delrin is too brittle. We use a large amount of it in our equipment at my company. If you impact it, it will fail.

UHMW or HDPE, is the key. Plus it can be waxed;)

I believe they use UHMW on airboat bottoms. I've seen them cruise down a gravel road with no effort because of the plastic. Keeps the stumps from puncturing the hull too.

Delrin well brake. its to hard for what you need,, NYLON 66 would work the best but its $$$,,, so I would use UHMW or look at PVC sheet,,,, I think PVC is about as cheep as you can get.
