fixing to put together a big buggy, 5 tons and 53" goodyears. kind of like dan dibbles rig but bigger. no coil overs, this will be one of the low buck build ups that we are all but famouse for. i am thinking 3 row seating[have to fit the wife, kids and the dog]. but i am starting to think a small block won't cut it. does anyone know how much trouble it is to wire up a 460 or v10 dodge motor say a 94 to 97 model. a 454 would be great but i can get a ford or a dodge for way less money. anyone know of any sites that might help with the wiring?

i know the 460 ford has a cult following, and i think theres a 'hot rod kit' that will allow you to do a 6 wire hookup to anything...

5 Ton chit is cheap out hear in WA to,,,, but who wants the stuff? Its F***ing huge. I was looking at some of the shafts last week seeing if I could stuff them in a 2 1/2 ton rockwell but it did not look like there was a way to fit them.

gunracer1
01-30-2004, 01:31 PM
we were talking about stuffing the 5 tons shafts in a 2.5, but then decided it was way to much work. we are shooting for fast and simple here. pinion brakes, v8, autos and plenty of room to haul the ice chest. and drive over a few cars if we feel like it.

gunracer1

we built our's on for the 2.5s, i used land cruiser disks and zuk disks. i made up a bunch for the zuk disk and caliper. it fits real well and we just happen to have a few of them around. mike

Hey gunracer1 are the zuk disc smaller in dia. to a yota disc. Or do you know. I'm running into a problem with my front axle. The disc. is going to hit the frame. And i can only get 3 inches up travel. So maybe a zuk disc. with yota calipers. If there smaller.

well nolen is the only person i have seen go back to smaller tires. so i guess he is secure in his homohood:rainbow:. and if every thing goes right i might be able to put the new buggy together for under 2k. so far it is a 460/435/205 to either 5 ton rockwells[real cheap] or 406 mogs[ that will blow the budget] and a set of 53x16.00 wide goodyears. and i do plan to keep the 3 row seating with plenty of room for a big ice chest. i just sold the 404 mog axles, so i have a few bucks. so i will wait and see what shows up. mike

if i remember right it was a bolt in to the stock springs and a home made high steer arm. but i killed the springs pretty quick. and killed a few more sets till i went to 4" dodge lift springs in front and 5/4 chevy truck rears. i just made some spring pads and welded them on the axles. the offset is perfect to line up with the cruiser tcase. it was really pretty easy. i was just soa on stock springs at first. but i didn't run a traction bar and really cratered the stock ones.

Sounds simple enough. But what is involved in mating a toyota d-shaft with a rockwell axle? Were the 4" dodge springs mounted over or under the axle? And why the hell aren't more people buying cheap beat-up wagons and throwing 2.5 tons and 44s under em and wheelin??

You can watch a truck on 44's and 60 F/R run threw the rocks and stop dead because a very small amount of the diff touches a rock. Then watch a truck with 48's and 2.5s go threw the same line and snag up on the same spots for the same reasons. The 2.5 is less likely to break but has about the same clearance. Now watch a truck with 40's and mogs drive threw the same line and not stop once because it has more clearance than both other axles/tire combo.

More clearance is never a bad thing....plus mog 406 diffs are rated for about 4 tons.

i just cut the toy ds in half and used some .100 thick spacers about 4" long tacked on to the toy ds. slipped it insde a a duece and a half ds. and welded it up. i have run it up to 60 or so and no bad vibes, except for the 44" superswampers on bent rims.
the springs are spoa and i just welded a pad on top of the axle and bolted them together with 1/2 bolts.
and i have no idea whay more people don't low buck it, it is a hell of a lot more fun to spend money and go somewhere beside the garage.

the tires that mat is running are hard mo fos they didnt work very good on the ogre either.

as for the little buggys there is a place for them, hell my brother is running 38s on his zook and the wheelbase gets you through a lot of stuff. my big rig has to just drive over the rocks most of the time he can drive around them.

Do you NEED the doubler? .....How does it act with just one low range? Ive been running in 203 low and 205 high when ive been wheelin .the double low is to damn low for the 350:D its not realy i havent had it on rocks yet.

the 350 is a little different than the 4 banger i had in my zook.

i hope the new runs out so i can paint it before it rusts up.

man, I really like the work you've done. I imagine it is really fun to drive (over stuff). We had a jeep on 53"s at our comp and it was sick looking. It dwarfed 36s when parked right next to it. I like crawlin' but I like big too. I WANT ONE!!!!

NICE JOB, MAN!

That is badass. I wanted to put 2 1/2 tons on my toyota. Looks like I'll have to get 5 tons just to keep up:D 1000 for your Zuk motor. Was it made of gold?

;) silly people think they know thier big tire tread patterns. :shaking:

sidewalls look like they are actually flexing decently. I'm suprized to see that with no grooving. what PSI are you running in that pic?

gunracer1

i bet he has the valve cores pulled to get them to break in. we had to do the same thing with butter beans michilins. then you only run a few pounds, as in 1 to 3 psi. mike
