so i've been hearing, that the 700r that GM backed behind its smaller 6.2's is not a good tranny for that.. so what do u guys think is a good tranny for my 6.5? it seems ok to me, but i keep hearing about the 465 or the turbo 400's and 350's... so for an affordable price, what do u guys think would be good? right now its the 700/208 combo.. thanx

Manual trans hands down the 465 is hard to break-- for an auto behind a diesel I would choose the 400

My '82 6.2L had a TH400 behind it and it worked flawlessly. A stock diesel TH400 should be fairly easy to find.

The th400 is fairly easy to find and it did come behind the 205, 203 and the 208 all are 32 spline outputs.
It's a 3 speed with high first gear which is not very desireable and no overdrive but brute force is the key.
They are also not great on Fuel economy since they are not very efficient internally, a lot of drag.
They get 2 MPG less than my 465 equiped truck with the same engine.
And one more thing, the diesel Torque convertors will have six not 3 bolts, be sure to get that.

(the gear increase i think will help out alot, since they are ONLY 3.42s :( ) so i guess all i can do is wait and see..

thanx

Dont transmissions go in front of the transfer cases? :flipoff2:

I would go with a 465. They are nearly impossible to break and the combinations of transfer cases range from a 203 to a 208.

The only downfall is that the final drive ratio for fourth gear or third, whichever way you want to look at it, is 1:1. Why are you welding the gears on a DD? what axle are you welding up?

What gives? You guys are making a fuss about the TH400 not having overdrive but in the same breath you are recommending an SM465 which also doesn't have overdrive. Neither one will win any fuel economy wars but both are stout transmissions and readily available.

its a 12 bolt rear end with 4.10's...i bought it for 100 bucks... i made a post about this awhile ago.. do a search for welded rear end... u'll see... so... i'm thinking no tranny swap for awhile or at least untill my 700 takes a crap (knock on wood) besides, i dont want a manual tranny anyways, i'd rather stick with an auto..

Well first nice catch, behind in front, who cares, you knew what I meant. :flipoff2:

Now Juice:

the Th400 and the 465 both don;t have overdrive but the manual has less drag so better economy.
Welding a 12b is not something you really want to do, the 14bFF can take it because it's strong the 12b is a weaker carrier and when you weld to it it's gona weaken even more, just my opinion.
Now a diesel, no overdrive, and 4.10's I hope you will run something at least 33" or you'll be limited to 60MPH or killing your engine very soon.
The diesel doesn't like to stay close to red line which is 3500RPM on on the GM 6.5/6.2

has anyone ever put a NV4500 behind a 6.2 diesel?

hmmm.. well then.. looks like i wont be doing that then... cuz i looooove overdrive.. and i have 33's on it right now with 3.42 gears and it kinda sux, cuz its way underpowered.. so maybe just another tranny with an overdrive is in the market down the road??
