: axle turnaround
86k30 02-01-2004, 06:30 PM I cant seem to straighten this out in my head, mabye somone has done this before??? If I take a rearend and turn it around ( not flip it )so I can use it for a front end, will it still be in sync with my transfer case as far as the direction of rotation? I know there a lot of other obstacles , Im just asking hypothetically
NOODLES 02-01-2004, 07:28 PM yep. you will be driving on the coast side of the gear, just like any other non reverse cut gear.
DarkEternal 02-01-2004, 09:10 PM Plus you will be driving in a straight line :flipoff2:

Tim84K10 02-01-2004, 11:07 PM Besides the driveshaft eating a hole in the oil pan, tranny/transfer case, it'd work fine (other than no steering).
No more broke axle joints though. :)

I THINK he just means the third member? :D
86k30 02-02-2004, 07:24 PM FYI I'm considering building a 14 bolt front axle as I think it can be done for not much more than a bad ass 60. Any thoughts from ya'll on this ??? Thinking of super duty outer C's and knuckles ( do they use unit bearings or not?? ) I know it seems like a huge challenge but I've got lots of freinds to do some machine work in trade and some pretty good fabrication equitment ( and even SOME knowledge ) Any input would be appreciated!!!
Copenhagen 02-02-2004, 07:30 PM if memory serves me correct, I belive Wagoneer Machine has already done this.... I know there was a website that had pics of it. And for some reason Wagoneer machine comes to mind. but im not totally sure... might try searching in the General Forum.

blacksheep10 02-02-2004, 08:23 PM Funny you bring this up, I was just thinking about it as well. My only qualms were about keeping the oil in the diff. The way I'm seeing it, axle seals need to be near the side gears, not the u-joints. Just a thought I am having.
86k30 02-02-2004, 09:23 PM glad you brought that up black sheep ' as I hadnt thought about that yet. I have seen a seal used on ford 9" in roundy round cars that goes in the axle tube . It has the ability to " off center " if thta makes sense. gonna look into that , maybe the manufactuerer has other seals of that nature . A seal like this probably wouldnt last a terribly long time but neither will this 10 bolt I'm lookin to replace. BTW I've seen wagoners axle and it seems to function great so maybe they can give some insite into the seal issue. i think they used 60 stuff from the centersection out, I'm not sure of how a 60 seals though gotta search more
NOODLES 02-03-2004, 12:47 AM pfft don't need gear oil in the front axle. :flipoff2: I am sure you can get a seal in there if you try, they do the same when putting toy thirds with dom axle tubes and 44/60 outers. It wouldn't be cost effective I dont think spending all the money and time to make a custom 14 bolt front axles, just cause the detroit is cheaper for one than a front 70 or 60. get a 60 and a 35sl=pline detroit and be happy. the 14 bolt center you will also have to have front shafts resplined for the pitch of the splines on the inside of the axle shaft. dana and corporate axles do not use the same spline pitch, just sonmetimes the same spline count.
thundr undrgrond 02-03-2004, 02:47 PM in my opinion, u could build a hp front 60 for what u would have into the 14blt, till axles get splined, tubes, inner c knuckles, outers, u could get a ford 60 and retube it, with the same axles, and buy the locker, and not have as many driveshaft issues as u will with the low pinion of the 14bt
blacksheep10 02-03-2004, 04:03 PM Go rockwell outers and a 14 center like we are talking about right now in general discussion
