i am leaking gear oil through the rear drive shaft seal on my transfer case. upon disconnecting the driveline it was apparent that the bearing is bad. my question is do i have to take the trasfer case off in order to replace this bearing. i am going to start this in about an hour so any info would be great and the sooner the better.

It might be a ittle different depending on what transmission and transfer case, but assuming that you have the stock gear:
1) Drain the T'case
2)Remove the PTO cover, tranny output shaft cover and drive shafts. Disconnect linkage.
3) remove the 3 17mm bolts on the top fo the T'case that hole it onto the tranny and remove the two that are inside the trasnfer case just inside the PTO cover.
4) Rig a puller on the tranny output shaft. This can be anything from a real puller to a steering wheel puller with the appropriate sized bolts or a short piece of chain. Mount the chain to two opposite cover bolts across the end of the shaft. Place a bolt through the center link, then a washer and nut. Start tightening the bolt and nut against the tranny shaft to pull the case off. You might have to grind a point on the bolt to keep it fron slipping off the tranny shaft.
