: Anyone ever weigh their Jeep (TJ)
Fred Wilson 12-30-2001, 06:33 AM Anyone every weight their TJ.. Well I did, as I'm getting custom springs. Needed total weight, and front and rear half weight. See sig for vehicle details. A couple of other extra notes. Soft top. A "thin" spare, Q78 15, mounted tight to the tailgate (Bestop swing out), full tank of gas, me in vehicle (175 lbs), and full trail gear, tools, CO2 tank. I've always maintained that TJ's are really rear weight biased, and have always tried to get wieght to the front. Anyway, here's the breakdown, front and rear axle half
weights and total
Front axle half: 2040 lbs
Rear axle half: 2460 lbs
Total weight: 4500 lbs !!
Pretty darn heavy, and really rear weight biased. Now to really screw up the rear weight bias, throw on a hardtop, and hang a big 'ole heavy spare waaaayyyy off the tailgate, like some of the swingout bumpers do and maybe throw a full gas can or two on the rear. ;)
:)

Turtleack 12-30-2001, 08:36 AM I too have weighed my TJ as I tow it on a trailer behind the motorhome frequently. I do have the hardtop, and quite a bit of heavy body and chassis armor. I come in at about 5100 with the similar equipment plus the hardtop. Generally I just figure about 5000 and go about my business. The rear is quite a bit heavier than the front and I ended up using RE 4.5 rear springs to keep it pretty level with a Tera Flex 3" plus lift kit. We went through 4 sets of Terra rear springs before the RE springs. Had them iver 2 years and have no noticable sag yet.
1TonJeep 12-30-2001, 01:02 PM Wow! thats seems way high! i would have figured 4000 as a guess. it makes me wonder what my CJ7 weighs. i know stock it weighed 3750 or there abouts. ive added d60 front and d70 rear both full width. a built 360 (probably weighs the same as the stock 304), T18/d20, 42" TSL's on steel wheels (140lbs per wheel/tire). I did get rid of the heater, emissions crap, and rear seat. what do you guess it weighs????!!! Oh yeah i also added Runck bumpers front and rear woth a 8274 on the front

cajack 12-30-2001, 05:07 PM Same story on the Terra 3 inch kit. I ended up with RE 4.5's in the rear and put a spacer in front with my original Terras. The rear Terras had begun to sag.

TJBob 12-31-2001, 03:47 AM Forgive him, it's around the new year, and isn't just about everyone thinking about weight right now?
All that rear weight helps keep you from toppling over.
Just put your jeep on a diet for a couple weeks, then forget about it.
SLADE 12-31-2001, 01:00 PM Don't forget 2 ice chests. 1 1/2 for Beer and 1/2 of one for food.
P&T Jeeps 01-01-2002, 04:53 PM I think this thread is getting heavy w/ all of those massive sigs...
what the fawk newbie??? :flipoff2:
sanyi83 01-01-2002, 07:43 PM how much does a stock YJ weigh? and how about with a RE 4.5 inch lift and 33 inch MT/r's?
1TONTJ 01-02-2002, 10:39 AM My TJ weighs 5100lbs and that's with nothing in it. :D
Phil
withamc 01-02-2002, 11:12 AM Wow - maybe I've been figuring wrong all this time. I took my YJ down to get it weighed a few years ago at a recycling facility and they told me it weighed right around 3600 lbs. Maybe I should check again.
1TONTJ 01-02-2002, 11:18 AM You are probably right - stock YJ around 3600
Phil
My TJ is not stock :flipoff2:

Niether is my YJ :flipoff2: - 44's F/R, what else would add an additional 1500 pounds?
1TONTJ 01-02-2002, 02:38 PM You saying your YJ only weighs 3600 lbs MODIFIED?
That is LIGHT.
Phil
withamc 01-02-2002, 09:32 PM Well, let's see... since I weighed it I've changed the front from the D30 to the D44, done the spring-over, added a Sam's anti-wrap bar, went from 33's to 35's and added the front part of the cage. It already had the swing-away tire carrier with two jerry cans. I can't imagine that added much more than 200 lbs. Maybe I'm wrong. This summer the 5.0 goes in, probably with an AOD or C4. Haven't decided what t-case to use yet. Flipped 300? 231 with the Tera-Low? I really can't afford an Atlas. I've heard the 5.0 is actually lighter than the 4.0, so not much should change there.
sanyi83 01-02-2002, 11:50 PM I checked the door sticker on my 95 Yj and it says stock weight is a little over 4000lbs. I find this amazing for suchs a seemingly small car. My ramcharger is only about 2.5 tons.

That's what it's supposed to weigh fully loaded with all passengers, gas, payload, etc.

Please don't ever call your Jeep a car again.

Try looking in the GROUP PURCHASES (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21961) thread. You just might get what ya wished for when you went to see Santa this year! :D
Just a little voice echoing from the desert through Camarillo and up the Conejo Grade.
wedge 01-03-2002, 10:37 PM You can't weigh the front then the back and add them together, it dosn't work that way. Because when you weigh one end you are getting a total from the centerline of the oppisite axle to the end you are weighing an vise versa, so in essence you added the weight of the middle portion of your jeep twice! Take it to the local waste recycler, park it on there scale, go inside and ask them what it weighs, should be around 3300 to 3500lbs.

You sure about that? Sounds like a bit of :smokin: theory to me!
How would a 3300 lb Jeep push the Jeep at the tires down 4500 lbs? :flipoff2:
Any physics/engineering types here to confirm this weird science?
Phil;)

You have to pick the center point of the vechicle, this could be middle of wheel base distance or total vehicle length (more accurate), and then when you weigh yourself have that point be directly above the edge of the scale for the front and then use the same point for the back. For this to work, the same line across the vehicle has to be used and it has to be straight across. If my theory is correct, when you put the whole vehicle on the scale then it should equal the two added together. If not I am going back to my Static's professor and telling him I didn't deserve that A.
Even though the vehicle's center of weight is not in the middle, this does not affect the situation. Of course if one side is heavier than the other the center is off, but that is why one side is heavier.
Just my early morning idea.
It doesn't matter where your tires are on the scale. Does your statics professor do this :smokin:
JHarsany 01-04-2002, 10:22 AM Originally posted by diiulio
So you're telling me that if the vehicle just drove the front two tires onto the scale one inch from the side it would weigh the same as if the vehicle kept driving onto it until the back tires were one inch from driving on the scale?
Yep.
1TONTJ 01-04-2002, 10:32 AM Originally posted by harsanyj
Yep.
I agree with that statement also.
Phil
Not :smokin: at the moment either ;)
diiulio 01-04-2002, 10:58 AM Maybe you guys are right? I was wrong before, once.
Yep, I was wrong. Make that two.
Guess I didn't deserve an A, I don't know why I thought it created a moment arm. I blame it on my vacation, not me. It is never my fault.
pokey 01-05-2002, 12:09 AM My "84" CJ is at 4200 lbs. Pretty much even at both ends.
Bud:smokin:
badassjeepguy 01-05-2002, 01:56 AM mine used to weigh 4000 with me in it........ im sure that has gotten heavier since last time weighed
