Is there a trick to replacing a vavle stem after you have ripped one off? I have tried wd-40 but justcan't get the new one to pop into place. I know how to do it with the tire dismounted, but am trying to avoid doing that.

TIA,

Jackie

So your trying to install it from the outside? Hmm, dont think I've ever seen that done... I guess with enough work anything is possible,,but.

You can have the outside bead off in less than a minute with a high lift, add 30 sec to that to pop the new one in from the inside of the rim,, and it hardly seems worth it the other way. With the large size of the inside rim part of the valve stem, I really do not think you will get it passed through the rim hole undamaged.

I've seen it done by laying the tire and wheel on the ground. Get some one to stand on the tire to compress the side walls in. It will take a little work to walk it down. Should give you enough room to put the valve stem in from the inside or take it to a tire shop. Good Luck. :D

I have never seen it done from the outside. Just pop the bead loose near the stem hole and place the stem in from the inside. You can use some soapy water if you like. Use a pair of sidecutter pliers (DIKES) to slightly grip the threads on the stem and use the pliers as a lever agaist the edge of the rim to pull the stem into the hole. Use some soapy water on the bead while airing up the tire. If you don't have enough air to seat the bead remove the valve core and try again. After the bead seats install the core and air it up the rest of the way. I used to work with tires a lot and this was the fastest and easiest way I found to install a stem. Even with using those fancy tools you could buy.

I just gave up and popped the bead, but I have seen it done on a trail without doing that I just couldn't figure it out.

Thanks,
