I am thinking of buying a used discovery like a 1997, with around 50k on it. Any good web sites to check out first? Or any discovery owners with opinions?

I have a 1996 SE7 Disco.

Have you ever owned a british car before?

Parts, Never go to the dealer! There are plenty of part supplyers that have all the parts and are not sky high on the prices.

BTW The starter is a Bosch unit and any electrial rebuild shop can handle it for ~125.00

Did you miss the L.R. fourm here on POR?

Well Old Scout how do you like it? It would be my daily driver. I was thinking of a fj60 but then there are all the things I would want to do to it. I have a wheeler daily driver now circa 84.
I would keep it.
But despite the fact I keep insisting that a spool is ok for street use the swampers and spool are beginning to wear on me. :)

I assume the disco has a comfortable ride, nice features. I know if I drive one and like it I will buy. But are there any years to "stay away from" I saw a 97 at a dealer they are asking 15,500.00 And maintenance issues. When we bought my wifes passat I didn't check anything out , turns out that the only place you can get the oil changed is the dealer:eek:
And no I didn't notice the land rover page until after I posted.

I replace my 91 explorer with disco. I'm very happy with my Disco and after I cut off the air dam and lifting 6". It looks like it wheels now. I was looking at TOYs but the disco has solid axles , V8 and the toys do not, plus there were more $$.

The 1994-1995 have a 3.9L engine running a OBDI system. In 1996 they went to a new engine with the same displacement but many internal upgrades and a new computer and engine management system. They called it the 4.0L and it uses a OBDII system.

The 96-99 Disco series I had very few changes over the years and are basically all the same. Some will say that the 96 is a dog year because of the new OBD system had some bugs in it. After reviewing every service record on mine from the day it was delivered to the day I bought it, my 96 is rock solid.

GO drive one!

Check out discoweb.org you can read til your heart is content

15,500 for a 97 you can do better. Try lrx.com and ebay for better deals

96 is a dog year especially early 96, mine has been terrible as have most others I know of, 97 is better, 98 and 99 SD is better still, disco II I don't really like.

They are sooooo easy to fix DIY and with discoweb you can get pretty much anything answered in a few hours. Also the aftermarket parts and especially tech support is good.

These guys answer questions for free and stock EVERYTHING

www.roversnorth.com

and this guy gets parts really cheap

www.discountrovers.com (maybe no s)

and when you want to mod it

www.rovertym.com

Avoid the 5 speed as it is weak and check for a rear main leak, no real reason to fix one but something that is spendy and very common. I like the SD models the best as sunroofs and power seats are not as good as no roofs and manual seats

Also check out range rover classics the 93-95 LWB is very nice and not expensive, though I would try to avoid 93s.

If you are ok with britishness and can NOT take it to a dealer they are not too costly to maintain and fix. Gas is expensive 12-14mpg on 93octane hurts. Also NAPA etc have nothing so you have to mail order
