: Embarasingly amateur mounting tire on beadlock Q
BillaVista 12-30-2001, 12:57 PM OK, the Rockstompers are all welded up, nutcerted, and painted.
Time to mount the tires.
Normally, at the club, I use the tire machine to seat the beads, it has a foot switch to give a humongous burst of air to seat the beads, that doean't require the valve stem to be in.
I'm doing the beadlocks at home (and will want to be able to do them on the trail if req.)
After you've wrestled the tire on and torqued all the bolts down...how do you get the inner bead to seat with your shop compressor or power tank?
I haven't tried yet, but my tire chucks all need the valve core to actuate them, and I'm pretty sure with the valve core in you won't get enough flow to seat the bead.
So what do you use? Some kind of blow gun, or is there a special tire chuck or...?
Thanks
Lean it up against a wall with the inner bead facing you, take the valve stems out and hook up the compressor. Then plant your foot in the center of the wheel and push. It'll seat the bead enough for it to start inflating. The compressor will handle the rest :D
xextr3m3 12-30-2001, 01:12 PM use just the air hose...nothing connected at the chuch and use it that way
taradon 12-30-2001, 01:27 PM Take a ratchet strap and wrap it all the way around the circumference of the tire. It should be on the middle of the tread, then tighten it up and use your regular air compressor and it should seat the bead. Make sure once you seat the bead to take it off because you can break the strap if you put too much pressure in the tire.

AIRZUKI 12-30-2001, 02:14 PM Three seconds of ether spray........ ( quickstart ).... light match, throw , FOOOMP ........yer done............
only use the quck start that says " not to be used for mounting tires" ......... this kind works best.>>>>:D :D :D
marco 12-30-2001, 02:39 PM I keep the valve stem and core in the wheel. Turn up the psi to 120 and the bead sets. I used soapy water on the inner bead.

Yeah, sorta what he said....Just attach the female quick disconnect to the valve.
You guys put too much effort into this ;)
BillaVista 12-30-2001, 04:54 PM Maybe...but I put to much effort into everything I do
And i for one appreciate all the great help and tips..
PLus, you know, it's kind of cool to discuss simple tech and shop stuff, instaed of Alloy axles and CTM joints all the time
I used to really like that "tips and tricks" column in one of the rags..Fourwheeler??
BTW - What type of chucks do you have that fit on the valve? All mine are "M" style.
Anyone know why there are about a dozen different styles anyway?
Bill, you ARE overthinking this

Just put the valve stem and core in and airt it up.... it will seat just fine....

Yep if it dont its cause the tires not touching the rim... in which case... ;)

Aww shucks David, it wouldn't be me if I wasn't oberthinking something ! Heck, me not overthimking something would be like you not argueing something :D
Guess I'll just get at it...thanks for the link, and all you guys for the tips.
Seriously Bill :p If you notice in my write-up I never even mentioned the process for airing them up... the reason being that it was simply a non-issue.
Now get to it and enjoy your beadlocks :)
fj40charles 12-31-2001, 06:58 AM I use a 5 gallon plastic bucket to hold my rim and tires on it. I will then tighten down the bolts. After this. I'll get on top of the tires and push down on the tire with my knees and arm and air up the tire. Looks kinda of funny, but it works well.

PTO DAVE 12-31-2001, 09:27 AM I use the 5 gallon bucket also.Just put rim and tire on bucket bolts facing up. The bottom kinda seats itself.Core out.Lots of a
air. Works good down in the mudhole.:smokin: :smokin:
heavytlc 12-31-2001, 09:32 AM I have never had a problem getting the bead to seat. Valve core in,standard clip on chuck.I do not use straps ect.The rim will usually move from front to back on the inner bead (with 37-38 tires)enough to get a slight seal.Just keep the chuck clipped on it will seat(nice loud pop)in 15-30seconds.It really is a no brainer.
Rubicrawler 12-31-2001, 10:29 AM 1. Apply soapy water to inner bead (if you didn't already to get
it over the outer bead)
2. Put the tire and wheel on a stump (or other suitable stand)
with the beadlocks facing up
3. Remove valve core
4. Apply liberal amount of air or CO2
5. Have a beer or three
VT_Toy 12-31-2001, 10:29 AM I've reseated tires MANY times with a little compressor and a ratchet strap around the tire. Takes about 5 minutes, but it works and it's safe. My 34x9.5 Swampers would come off the bead at least once every run until I put them on 6" wide rims.
