OK, I am about to start my junkyard search for a SM420. (Going in my dad's FJ-40.) I just need to know if there are any identifying plates or such on the transmission and where they should be located.

Also....do all the SM420 have the 7:1 first gear??? If not, how do i make sure that i get the right one. (What code should the info plate have on it?)

Thanks

not stamped anywhere that I know of, but they look pretty unique. Look like this <br>http://www.novak-adapt.com/images/pics/sm420_flq_lr.jpg <br> and this<br> http://www.jeeptech.com/convtrans/sm420yj/trans20.jpg http://www.jeeptech.com/convtrans/sm420/4201.jpg http://www.jeeptech.com/convtrans/sm420/4204.jpg <br> and late models look like this<br>http://www.jeeptech.com/convtrans/sm420/late420.jpg<br> They all have a casting similar to this http://www.jeeptech.com/convtrans/sm420/4203.jpg

Yes, they all had a 7:1 first gear ratio. Just look for the bulge on the side of the tranny. Also, this will almost for sure be the shortest four speed that you will come across in the yard. Don't worry if you only find 2WD version because they are almost the same as most of the 4WD versions because most of these trucks used a divorced t-case.

420 rock and you can still get parts if you need them they seemingly never wear out , awesome tranny

10.5 long
6 spline output
I would get one that had the snap ring that retained the cluster gear , sometimes the bolt on doesnt clear the adapter:smokin:

I have heard that the 4WD versions had the groove for the snap ring retainer. Is this true? I don't know why they would be any different thought?

Well I just took a look on the Novak (http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/sm420_to.htm) page and they don't make a SM420 http://www.pirate4x4.com/ubb/icons/icon2.gif NP205 adapter.

Look for the huge hump on the passenger side. When I got mine, I could actually put it into first gear, and spun the out put and watch the input gear- count 'em. 7 to 1. I think the junkers generally have them drained, so pop the top and look out for missing chunks of metal and such... bring alone a 9/16 socket.

I found my sm420 at the local wrecking yard- it had the rear output for 2wd, and it came off like nothing. I didn't notice a groove for a snap ring or anything...?? Bought a warden's adaptor plate kit, bolted it between that and the toyota tcase, and I was in business. A little grinding. But overall, quite easy.

good luck- :fj:

Some did. these were mated to non-divorced t-cases. Kinda rare and the cases kind suck. The adapter on mine required that groove.. so I took the main shaft out and cut one. Pretty easy.

I bought the adaptor plate over the summer- For the sm420 to the Landcruiser 3 speed t-case. Basically, he handed me a machined piece of aluminum and a zip-lock bag filled with nuts, bolts, bearing, and odd stuff, and no instructions what-so-ever. It was pretty basic though. I think his plate is a knock off of the AA plate, but I don't know. And I know there's a guy on POR who makes them also. Just do a search. You'll find a lot!
