short of taking the drums off and measuring the shoes, is there any external distinction or measurement difference between the 2 1/2" and the 3 1/2" drums on the 14bolt?

I'd have to take it a part, then put it back together to chase the brake parts then take it all apart to fix it again.

the only numbers I found are the turn diameter (13" max) and what looks like 361442 or 381442

thank in advance for helping with this hardcore tech question ;)

The majority of the 14 bolt rears had 2.5 shoes. All of the duallys have the 3.5 shoes. The 1 ton single wheel trucks have the 3.5s also. But to answer your question the 2.5 drums measure about 6.5'' from where the drum mounts to the hub to the outside of the rim.
