: Will an automatic shift with vehicle stationary?

I'm getting closer to firing the motor for the first time. Just need a few more parts and some time to install them. Anyway, I'm pretty sure the motor will fire and run fine. It's the tranny that I'm worried about. Although I beleive I ran into every possible problem BEFORE final assembly, you never can tell, as I decided to rebuild the tranny myself and do not feel very confident. My question is if the tranny will shift through the gears with the vehicle stationary. I've never tried it, but thought that it might be possible. I still do not yet have the axles under the truck, so an actual road-test is still a long time away. However, it would be nice to be able to start the engine, and watch the tranny shift through the gears, before I move onto the axles thinking everything is fine. No, the tranny shifting gears doesn't automatically mean a successful rebuild, but if it does, than that is a damn good thing. Again, I just need to know if it is possible for the tranny to shift through the gears with the vehicle stationary on jackstands.

Thanks for any information

i don't know if it would go to 2 and 3. you can put it into 1st or R while sitting still, i know this will engage the pump.

if you don't have any axles or a t case on it, why don't you just fire it up and find out?

i also know that there is a vacume hose on my th350 that lets it shift smoothly and at the proper time, maybee you can rig it so that is sucks a butt load of vacume and it will shift earlier?

Not sure what happened with garry's brothers tranny, but I have done this and it does work. Laziness and beer do wonders when working on a truck late at night

Ive done that, with cars, and the back end jacked off the ground, a bunch of times. I don't see any reason, why you can't do it w/o the driveshafts in, and watch the T-case yokes.

Just be aware that there is nothing to stop the tranny turning, so don't shift it back into park while its running. Neutral should be OK, to shut it down...

I think that if you don't have the T-case in there, it might spew fluid everywhere...

i wouldnt recomend trying it without axles and driveshafts in it. when you do, its just like driving down the road and putting it in reverse. there is no way to stop the internals of the trans from freewheeling with no load on them. you could very well do more harm than good.
