Here is the latest:
Fabbed motor mounts and pushed motor back 8" and down 1"

Just thought this post shoudl show some your your other pictures........

Well there's mine #011
Still in the mental planning stages and waiting to see the pedal assembly kits that Camo and Air Ride are putting together. I do have some trick rear spring stuff up my sleeves. Budbuilt has some cool stuff too that I'm looking at for the belly. I'll post pix once under way. Not sure if I'll take a semi running 82 4x that I have or just start hacking the flatbed that I just built. Kind of tempted to remove the cab and flatbed. It is a one of a kind but I think it will be worth the sacrifice. Anyone want my flatbed or cab? I will sell them cheep if I go that route. I live near the Hammers if you want them. Go to my site to see more pix

Well it's a done deal. Off with the cab tonight and flatbed tomorrow. Maybe have #011 tacked on in a few days or so (Time permiting).

These are existing measurements that will change during the process. The transfer case will be tucked up above the bottom of the frame. The engine/driveline will be pushed back 8"...Looks like I'll have an 1-1/2" of clearance between the back of the engine and the cross member once I push the engine back 8"

http://sandtastictoys.com/FrameSitting9.JPG

Here's the most recent update thus far. Could not wait any longer, had to fab my own pedal assembly. Got it tacked in but does not look as cool as the up coming Hendrix model but it works fine for now. Just got the steering mounted as well. It sure does test the foresight. Got to keep in mind the fire wall, floor board, instrument panel/dash and final placement of the drive train.

To Belly-Pan or not to Belly-Pan...That is the question:D

Not sure if I like the Belly-Pan idea due to the fact that it weighs a ton (At least 100 lbs) and I hate adding weight. It will lighten up some after I cut out for the drive shafts but if your going to have extra weight, this is where you want it:D

http://www.sandtastictoys.com/BellyPan1.JPG

Looking forward to getting the belly pan complete and then go after the fire-wall, dash, and floor board. Then the plumbing and electrical, then the rear suspension, then, then, then...a  then Jambo:D

what thickness material did you use for the belly pan? are you gonna use the stock tcase mounts? how will you account for the angle of the tcase/tranny when bolting the mounts to the belly pan, will you use shims of some sort or just rely on the rubber to give to accomidate for the angle?

1) 3/16" plate
2) No, going to fab my own mounts with rubber bushings
3&4) I will point pinion upwards. The angle is not as severe as one would think.

thanks. im in the middle of figuring out my bellypan at the moment and was debating if is should start cutting up my new budbuilt and fab new braces for it at the frame rails or go your route.

so the poly bushings will mount to the 3/16" plate or completely seperate mounting?

Not 100% sure yet. A friend of mine says he knows of some GM tranny mount that may be modified to mount to the pan. The pan is real stout. So mounting to the pan should be no prob. May add a stiffener if need be:D

Why inboard the springs when you're still going to hang up on the hanger that is lower than the frame? Maybe it's just the picture, but it just looks like you moved them in, not up where they like to hang up?

Your right, I could have tucked up my hangers but that would lessen my overall ground clearance of 27.5". Also I have rarely had my hangers make any contact with rock anyway. It will be less likely with them closer together than where they were. The hangers are not as low as they were and have a tilted angle to let them slide a bit:D

so if you dont mind..how did you go about attaching your belly pan? self tapping bolts into the frame? or brackets inside the frame? pics?

Hammer Hog
02-18-2004, 05:01 PM
Okay...here is a better angle of my spring hanger for all of you that ask and think my hangers are too low and will hang up on stuff. You can see the hanger is tilted to take on nearly the same angle as the spring. It also is up from the original position about an inch. If for some reason they are too low, I can place new holes a bit above it's current position and shave the mount a bit. I do think this is a good compromise considering I am not losing any ground clearance under the belly. I am still 27.5" off the ground and will not drag as much as others will when all their hangers are tucked or frenched
:p
I also will be changing the hangers out sometime down the road. I have a custom hanger that I'm going to make that will allow better articulation. Just don't have enough time to make them up yet, I will wait till I am wheelin first and catch my breath a bit:D Then fine tune the rig.

:D :D :D http://www.sandtastictoys.com/Inboard6.JPG

a2b, I used tapered bolts and welded mounting plates to the inside of my frame. Don't have any clear pix of them yet. If you look hard enough, you can see them. I am going to add a few more as soon as I can get more bolts.:D

Re:Todd, Thanks and your rig is looking real cool too. Keep up the pix, we enjoy them:D

Mocked in the rear-end for drive shaft angles. Produced about 24 degrees on both ends. If I pointed rear pinion to t-case, the angle at the t-case would have been quite bit greater. Also gained better ground clearance too by pointing the pinion upwards:D

Good point... that's why it's just mocked at this point in time:D Could lower it a bit I suppose. How steep of an angle is too steep at the t-case?

ya thats a pretty steep angle. how far back is your motor? 6"...hmmmm...so mounting the tcase that high might be a problem then?

I moved it back 8"

Someone (Wont mension who) at one of the "Approved Venders" made the suggestion of pointing the pinion upwards above the t-case and match the angles on both ends of the drive shaft as I did. And I got to admit at the time I was too focused on matching angles, I was not even thinking of the pinion bearing possition...oops:eek: That person may not have realized how severe the new angles are due to pushing back 8" and raising up the t-case 5" even though I did tell him what I did.

As I said before, it's only mocked at this point and I can easily rotate the diff housing to make it work:D

BTW Don't even suggest Hi-Pinion...they are unreliable in the rear.

Randy
02-22-2004, 10:22 AM
On my new buggy the rear drive shaft is shorter than a stock front shaft by an 1 1/2. I am running a front cv and have over shot the t-case by a cupple of dagrees. Our buggys will never see any street time and if over filled the pinion bearings should last a long time before thay need to be replaced.

I am thinking that if I turn my pinion down (with the axle on jack stands) as far as I am going to have it turned up in the rig and then fill it with oil, it should have enough oil to keep the bearings happy.

Lust my plan havent tried it.

Hammer Hog
02-22-2004, 10:43 AM
Just thinking...wouldn't the oil be splashed up there anyway due to the fact that everything is spinning through the oil and oil should be flinging everywhere?
Was thinking that the high pinions are above oil level too and would have the same problem. As I said just thinking:D

pmurf1
02-22-2004, 11:22 AM
You ought to ask JackA and Zags about how your angles look. They're going through the same troubles right now. Moved the motor way back and up with a flat belly and driveshafts and CV's are dropping like flies. I highly doubt that setup is going to work for more than a run or two, even if you lower the rear of the t-case a lot. You went too far back IMO.

camo
02-22-2004, 11:33 AM
just rotate the pinion down and over fill the diff.

i am going to add a fill hole on the top of my diff to make overfilling easy.

i am not going to run a cv cause they are weak. plus a stock toy ujoint can take alot more degree. the ujoint will be a constant maintance item and i will probally replace mine every run. aslo i could care less about vibrations from not running a cv

With the engine back 8 inches, my angle came out to 30%. Rotated the pinion angle to match that, looks pretty good. I'll snap a pic tonight.

Hammer Hog
02-23-2004, 07:03 PM
Here is where I think the pinion will stay. It is now pointed straight and paralell to the t-case. It is at 25 degrees. Pinion bearing should no longer be an issue. Moved the rear axle back 1" to the next perch hole. Wheelbase is now 109.25"

longs are build from the same cores as profields. welding rings on the bell would not have keep the stub shaft from breaking.

I guess I should have read a little closer but it still stands that the profields and the new RINGLESS Longs are breaking regularly.

There are multiple 4 wheelin boards out there and people are breaking the PRO's and the NEW Longs on there as well.

The general concensus is that the OLD Stlye Longs are still the best route.

Hammer, i was looking on your buildup site and saw that you placed the all pro crossmember above the frame. how is this possible since you moved the engine back 8" and 1" down??

That's not suprising. If you look at the pic closely you'll notice the bottom
of the T-case is level with the bottom of the frame. It's the same as RE:Todd's
Short Bus II, except that RE:Todd uses a Bud Built crossmember that's 100%
flat and mounted to the bottom of the frame. The end result is the same.

I had the AP crossmember mocked in on top of the frame just for support cuz it was close to where it finally sets. It's now supported by a reinforced 3/16" belly pan.
http://www.sandtastictoys.com/BellyPan1.JPG
I do like the belly pan however I am going to replace the belly pan with a BudBuilt crossmember when time permits. I will mount it from inside the frame and will lower the t-cases about an inch or so to better my output angle.

Not much as of late.

However did do a couple of night runs recently.
Played on the first crux on Backdoor a few weeks ago. Did it with little effort :D Wanted to do more but my buddy's Jeep was not a contender for the whole run. Figured I was safe if I busted something (Like my remaining Profield  ) on the first crux cuz he could still reach me.
Played on another run the other night as seen below.
I have a set of Bellfields that are going in soon as I get my bling hubs and rotors back from AirRide :D Getting ready to do my hood and roof soon too, where as I have the aluminum ready to cut and bend :D Still have to switch out my Weber for a stock carb that I don't have. Got my window net but not installed yet, ordered some trick Wilwood pedal/MC assemblies and Quick disconnect steering wheel hub. Still need to get the two required fire extinguishers and first-aid kit. Also need the master kill switch too. I think that's all I need to meet the comp specs (I hope!) :D

Cool thing happened the other day...My wife drove my rig and liked it :D
The best part was that she says "Can you make me one in purple?" :D
BTW, she has an 87 EFI Extended cab :D I have an extra straight axle :D As if I didn't have enough projects! I think I can squeez it in somehow before she changes her mind. I'll have start cuttin while the cuttin is still good!

Any progress Hammer Hog?

Why are you geting rid of the belly plan? Are the driveline angles too much with it up that high? Any other problems?
Do you have any picts of inside, the floor, seat mounts, tranny tunnel and fire wall?

No progress as of late. Been too busy. Work, another build, and been fishing in Alaska the last couple of weeks. Havn't even installed my Bellfields and Hindrex's hub/rotor assemblies yet. Not even sure if I'll even make it to NorCal in August.

As far as loosing the belly pan, I want to loose the weight and gain more access under the floor board. I can really tell it's there (The weight). And if all these other Formulas are busting r&p's and stuff on the CalRok events, I want as little weight as possible. Got to remember, CalRoc is spectator friendly, and not so much competitor friendly, i.e. carnage. I'm not too excited on counting on busting stuff just to please the spectators at my expence :D So I'm not in any hurry at this point, so I'm taking my sweet time with my Formula build. Besides, I also started a street legal 87 Xcab rockcrawling, trail running build that has taken up some of my time.

As far as pics of the seat mounts and other floor board shots, no, I don't have any other than what I posted on my site.

RE: Todds rig was doing a rear burn and Lisa was hung on the rear diff with the front wheel over a ledge that gave them all the traction they needed to break the front R&P. The corses are great, not any harder on the rig than the Hammers. As long as you drive like you are at the Hammers.

I agree, the corses are great, even if they do toss ya on your lid more often than the Hammers  And the corses do take it's toll as does the Hammers. And I do plan to compete. My point is, I just want to be prepared with the right stuff as in having my rig dialed in and having plenty of spare parts and such and I am not going to rush things as where I do have other things going on that prevents me to be done when I'd like. :D

Wilwood said dump the bling braided brake lines, quick:(
Hard lines only until the wheel area. The braided line can expand under pressure and cause problems. They say you must concider the length times the amount of expansion. The areas near the wheels are fine because they are short. They also say may not pass teck in most other comps.

Yes, he and his spotter/wife? made a good team. Its a shame he didn't have a wide rear axle, cause we had spares and would have gladly gave it up to keep him in the comp. :(
