How would you get 24 volts out of a 12 volt system without running two batteries?

A step-up transformer. 2x the voltage but 1/2 the amperage.

Change to a 24 volt alt. or painstakingly rewind your armature.

Step up transformers are expensive...

Now you could ........use an inverter to 110V DC and then use a step down to 24...BUT.....that would be dumb.

I think I would just buy a 24 volt alt. look for them in alt energry place they are common in Micro Hydro.

the coil in you rig is a step up transformer. It is not that expensive.........but the 20Kv light bulbs are:D

Transformers work great on AC :D

You need a "dc to dc convertor" to step up the 12VDC to 24VDC.

Are you trying to use a gas engine alternator in a diesel???? Oh converted a 24V diesel into a 12V system, but need to power up the auxilary items (lights, etc)????

Marine application? Just find a commercial product (I can think of alot of 24V to 12V convertor applications, not too many 12V to 24V ones).

EDIT: On board welder. ZENA. http://www.zena.net You can use it as an alternator when you don't need a welder. Either 12V or 24V. Cool for those diesel Land Cruiser folks :D

Hey Mike are you wanting to operate just one 24v item? and stay with the 12 volt system for the rig?

Yea I have some solenoids that are 24v and I was hopping to use them on my buggy. Got them cheap and was hoping to change them to 12v but no luck. So I thought about getting 24v somehow. Could run all of them on less than 2 amps.

I think your easiest/ cheapest way to run those would be to purchase two small ( industrial emergency light) 12 volt batteries and use an isolater to keep them charged.

They are about 6 inch long 4 deep and 3 wide, sealed gel cell type
