We already have a 2001 super crew f150. and now my were looking to get a f250 Super Duty. preferably 7.3L power stroke w/auto. Does anyone have any idea what a 99-00 model is going for? Also what is the diff between the 250 and the 350 single wheel besides springs? This is gonna be a tow rig. Have there been any problems w/the auto's overheating? is the dual alternator option worth it on such a new street rig? Also has anyone used the hypertech programer on one? I heard it gives you 109 ft/lbs of torque over stock and seemed too good to be true.
Thanks
bob

Bob,
Depending on what you tow, you might need a F-350. Your right, the only real difference between the two is the rear springs (which allow you to legally carry 1100 more # in weight or hitch weight for towing). What are you looking for (4x2, 4x4, super cab, crew cab, XL, XLT, Lariat ?). I am a member of ford-diesel.com, lots of good info there. Also try kbb.com for used vehicle prices (Kelly Blue Book).

Auto has been having some problem (I don't know personally, I have the stick). Many people chip the diesels (50-125 hp, 125-200 lb-ft torque extra), beware of the transmission if you decide to. You should have no problems towing one CJ-5 with a 250, just make sure your vehicle weight including tougue weight is under 8800 lbs. I would guess that truck would run about 25 - 30k. used.

I would highly recommed getting the F-350 over the F-250. These trucks are so heavy that the 250 does not have much of a payload, especialy with the diesel. As someone else already did, I recommed you check out http://www.ford-diesel.com and ask questions there. It is a very informitive site.

I have the exact truck that you are wanting!! I pull a 28' farm type trailer with two YJ's on 35" boggers 6 or 7 times a year. Have had absolutly NO problems at all. I love My truck! Pulls all of that and still gets about 11mpg. Thats more than most of the guys that go with us that are pulling just one Jeep.

I have a 99 PSD, I am or should I say was a die hard Chevy nut. Not any more.
It is a f250 SD with 6 speed. It tows better than my 87 Chevy one ton with Holmes 440 wrecker rig. By towing better I don't meen power, I mean the way it pulls and handles.
I think the 350's have a 60 front instead of a 50. For the bigger rearend, I think it needs to be a dually.
I paid 21k for it. It had around 75k miles. I almost got the identical truck except for auto trans and no ESOF. It was 23k and had around the same miles, but the dealer wouldn't work with me on multiple trades.
I wanted a one ton dually for braking and handling around corners in mountains, but it has done great in those conditions. Even without trailer brakes a few times.
Just my opinion, but try to get one without ESOF (electronic shift on the fly). The front hubs automatically lock by vacum. There are 2 seals in the frontend (just on the outside of the diff) that are prone to leakage and the diff needs pulled to change them. Mine isn't leaking that bad yet, and when it does I will fix it, but some of the dealers get almost a grand to fix it.
And I just like a lever instead of a damn switch.
Just my 1/50 of a dollar.

Thanks for all the advice. Were gonna get one in the next 3 weeks if not sooner, looks like a 2001, XLT, 4x4, 4door, 7.3L w/auto, and a tandem axle trailer. definately gonna stay away from the shift on the fly crap.
thanks

Don't be so afraid of the SOF stuff in the Super Duty. The transfer case is the exact same piece with an electric actuator. The info on how to convert to lever operation is readily available. The vacum hub lock has great potential for problems but there is an external manual overide to lock them in. If ordering the truck by all means ditch the SOF, but don't rule out a good truck with SOF.
