: Gm 4l80-E questions
Just got a 480L-E. 50$ Bellhousing has a small crack no big deal.Just got done tearing it down. Not too bad inside.I know it requires a computer to control the transmission.
1.I found some companys that sell a computer system for this tranny.Has anybody used one of these.Any personal experiences.
2.Does anybody know of someone that makes a manual valve body for this tranny.Looked but could not find anything.
3.E-mailed some tranny people(art carr,trans-go,a-1)I have a t-400 3:1 low gear set and HD sprag.Compared the sprags they look the same should. So did the planatery cage and planets gears. Was wondering if there are any tranny Gurus here that could tell me if these pieces would for sure swap.Would be bad ass too have a 3:1 low and over drive with t-400 strength.
4.Anybody have expreience with these trannysChecked the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders site and found some recall info and such but was looking for some testimonys or Horror storys.
5.I have a 700r4 also. should i just use that?
I want a Auto and the overdrive Too offset the axle gearing for any highway driving
Some vehicle info 85 Cj-7 in about a thousand pieces.60's front and rear still working on the rebuilding.Going too go with 5.86,detroits.shave the shit out of the bottoms.Tbi 350 with comp cam.Going too go Atlas II(Damn there expensive).High angle shafts from Jess(had him make a set for my old Blazer they rocked)
Thanks for any info.
High5 12-30-2001, 11:15 PM i have installed one in my jeep. i got it from a 99 dually that was wrecked. i have the vortec 350 and computer to so that isn't a problem. however, ever since i have put this thing in something isn't right. it doesn't shift correctly. it is like it starts out in 3rd and then shifts directly into 4th. i took it to a tranny shop and they said when they control it with a scan tool that when the scan tool tels it to go to first it is in 4th, 2nd=3rd, 3rd=2nd and so on. wierd! the tranny only had 15k on it but i did have a gy swap tail shafts so who knows. it is still at the tranny shop and he is supposed to spend more time with it next week. anyway i hope you have lengthened you jeep. the 4L80E is long in a jeep. my cj5 has a 100" wheelbase and with a short shaft d300 on the back of it my rear d/shaft is at a pretty good angle.
dog walker 12-30-2001, 11:55 PM The 4L80 already has a 3.08:1 first gear in it.
Jeff
Dogwalker. you sure i thought it only had a 2.5:1 be nice if it is lower.I'll have too do some more looking.
High5 I would like too get a vortec too.But already have the Tbi setup and it runs good.I've been tring too read up on this tranny. You said you had the rear output switched did you have too do this too mate it too the d300?
Just a thought on the reverse shifting.Do they have the front input speed and the rear ouput speed connectors switched.I think the connectors looked like they would be easy too switch.
Yes the SOB is long.Didn't really realize it till i put it next too a 700r4.I plan on running a Atlas II.I was thinking of moving the rear axle back about 6 inch.Looks like it might be more then just a thought.
I found a company that makes the stand alone computer and harness.Looks pretty nice you can control every thing.Up shift point, downshift points, lock up everything. One nice thing about the computer i guess.
Hope you get it fixed when you do.Let me know.
Thanks for the input.
High5 12-31-2001, 12:42 AM well it depends. was your 4L80E from a 2wd or a 4wd? mine was a 2wd with a fixed yoke output. to use the d300 adapter they require you to use the older tail shaft used with the slip yoke style output. if yours is a slip yoke style you will not need to swap it but it does need to be cut shorter. the input shaft of the dana300 is swapped to a 32 spline for this conversion. if you are going with the atlas (which i hope to do soon. just waiting to get out with it and determin which ratio i want) you will just need to order it with a 32 spline input. you will still need the d300 adapter plate though. i'm not sure on the speed sensor connectors. do you think that could cause it? i'll have to check. i hope to get mine going soon. if not i'm going with a th350 or 400. i wish that is what i would have done to begine with. i hate the length of this thing and it has been a pain so far. plus i don't need o/d with mine. it is primarily just a trail rig. oh well live and learn. i might sell it if i don't like it. :D
smitrock 12-31-2001, 05:31 AM bigd, they are right about the gearing in the 4l80
now if you need to find a home for the gear set for the 400
give me a yell
High5 -I have the 2wd fixed yoke. The shaft sticks out about the same as a 2wd 400.I going too go Atlas.Should be able too use advanced tailpiece for the 400.But know you got me worried about length.I better start doing alot measuring.
Hey Smitrock-E-mail me if you really want the gear set i have the hd 34 element sprag also. They both have about 200 miles on them.Long story on that tranny but bought it and it was rebuilt but they rebuilt it wrong and it burned the frictions up.That sucked.
High5 01-01-2002, 06:32 PM bigd, to use the aa d300 adapter i had to swap the fixed yoke 32spline tail shaft with a 32spline slip yoke style. the splines are cut further up the shaft for the slip yoke which allows you to use that shat because it has to be cut down. i'm sure the same would be required for the atlas x-case.

4L80E gears are:
2.48:1
1.48:1
1.00:1
0.75:1
Same as the TH400 on which it is based, 'cept for the 4th gear (which TH400 does not have).
The 4L60E has the 3.06:1 1st gear. That's the electronic version of the TH700.

Andy 911 01-02-2002, 12:06 PM Hey high5, where was your VSS? was it in your trans or in the gm t-case? I scooped up a vortec 350 with a nv4500 but I'm not sure if I snagged the VSS, if was in the t-case I left it at the wreckers. is there anyone who makes a inline one for the vortec?

What TEX said is correct about the gearing. Jeg's has a transmission computer for sale that is guilt by TCI. It is specifically built for the 4L60E and the 4L80E. Try checking into that to see if it helps.

my 4L80E was from a 2wd. the vss's (there are 2) were both in the tranny. i believe (not sure) that the output vss on the 4x4 versions was in the x-case. it would help if you would give the year and ask the board. someone here either has the vehicle similar to your donor and maybe a manual that would have the info you want. :D
