I'm rebuilding my 8274, without freespool. The motor and gear attached to the motor were toast. I called warn for a replacement but was told that they no longer made the keyed shaft type so I ordered the newer splined ones. Anyway, I recieved my new ones today and am noticing that without the spooling mech the gear on the motor shaft won't have anything keeping it in place. I'm contemplating notching a ring in the shaft for a snapring or maybe even tacking it in place. Any thoughts or experience? I've attached a pic..

What held the keyed one in place?
also you can buy the freespool lever and fit it to your earlier winch IIRC.
otherwise a snap ring will be req'd to stop the gear floating off line.

seen it done.
your top casing does it have the hole for the free spool?
with a blanking plate?
if not a replacment top section would be required and they aren't cheap as the gears are included.
I fitted the 4.6hp motor to mine recently
and far superior it proved to be...
as used to rescue a drowned 90 last weekend.
Pics on my website linked from the river crossing.
finally
you could drill the shaft and fit a split pin or R clip
but you already knew that right! :flipoff2:

You have a few choices.
1 Order part numbers 9285 (upper housing) and 8326 (clutch assy) and convert it to an 8274.
2 Drill the gear and shaft for a roll pin.
3 Machine grooves and install snap rings on both sides of the gear. You do not want the gear to walk around at all.
I would go with number 1 although it will be more costly (I just like having freespool). You may be able to find a used upper housing if you look around.
