: toyota rear diff
Wally85toy 02-07-2004, 08:13 AM I want to weld my rear end, but when i was reading my manual it says you have to pull the brake's axles and everything
this seems a bit big for me and i dont want to open a huge can of worms on this one
who has done it? is it as much work as it seems to get the rear center sectiion out?
NE-RokToy 02-07-2004, 09:30 AM it isnt much work, only a few bolts to get the brakes and everything off. If nothing else it will be a good learning experiance and a chance to check out your bearings and everything
wheelerfreak 02-07-2004, 10:24 AM I'm assuming you want to weld up the diff to make it a Lincoln Locker? You only need to take off 4 bolts on each end and then the brake lines, and e-brake. Then pull your rear driveline, and finally your rear diff. Make sure you clean the third member real well and get out all the gear oil so you can get a good solid weld. And then put it all back together and enjoy the sound of your tires squeeling around every corner.
gferris5 02-07-2004, 02:04 PM just make sure you get a really really, really good weld, my friend's welded diff (he didn't do the welds) grenaded on him on a gravel road and locked up a tire-coulda been ugly.
braxton357 02-07-2004, 02:21 PM I know on the 9" which is very similar, its nothing to do. You don't have to take the brakes apart, only take the drum off. But make sure you replace the seals while you have it all apart, and make sure you clean the gasket area around the dropout real well before replacing it.
HZJ60_Guy 02-07-2004, 02:28 PM Im not a fan of welding. It half assed at best.
I'd get a spool if that's the route you want to go.

Rescue 02-07-2004, 03:08 PM Advice if you are going to weld. fill in the spider gears with weld. Do not weld the spiders to the carrier that's the way it will go :nuke:
VT_Toy 02-07-2004, 09:04 PM I've broken 2 pairs of ring and pinions, welded spider gears held just fine :D Pre-heat them a bit to help with penetration.
Make sure you can open your filler plug before you drain the diff! I ran into that the night before a big run, ended up having to jack up one side and take the axle out again so I could pour oil in through the end of the housing :D
I recommend getting a spare diff for $50 and having that welded up, then do the swap. It's nice to have a spare around.
tanman2003 02-07-2004, 10:58 PM just saying, if you dont plan on replacing your seals at least pull the axles all the way out, and dont leave them hanging out.
rockcrawlinredneck 02-08-2004, 12:32 AM Like some have said above it is very simple. You do not have to take your brakes apart. First remove your tire's, Then undo your hard brake line from the backing plate and remove the E-brake cable from the accuating (sp) bracket (just pull the pin out). Once you have done that there is four, 14mm Nuts that hold the intire assembly to the axle housing undo those then carfully pull your backing plate off (the axle shaft will come out with it, You have to be careful not to fubar your inner axle seal when you do this.) Reapeat this on the other side then pull your diff. Sounds like a lot but it's really not that much.

I've had the opposit happen to me. I had just the spiders welded together and they all broke(welds) .I only run that one third welded like that. The guy that welded that one has been welding and setting up rears for more years than I've been alive. I've had the spiders welded together plus the spiders welded to the carrier and have never had a problem. I can tell you that the welded rears I have will take alot of abuse, 38's doing burnouts on the street , and twisted 2 driveshafts in half on the trail :D

Kevin
what do i have to watch out for to not screw those seals.
rockcrawlinredneck 02-08-2004, 10:29 AM When you pull your axle out you have to pul it out straight, dont let it rest on the seal as you pull it out or you will have to replace that seal. If it rest's on the seal you will mess the seal up and it will leak. You might just want to replace that seal for the heck of it since you wil have it apart.
Wally85toy 02-08-2004, 10:42 AM that might be a good idea, what do you call it?
inner rear axle seal?
rockcrawlinredneck 02-08-2004, 11:22 AM Yep rear axle inner wheel seal. IIRC they are only about 5 bucks or so, not very pricy. Where are you located at?
Wally85toy 02-08-2004, 12:38 PM cold lake alberta... how come?
rockcrawlinredneck 02-08-2004, 03:37 PM Just wondering, I know a cheap place in Sac to get the seals so I was gonna tell ya, I think it might be to long of a drive for ya though.
Wally85toy 02-08-2004, 04:35 PM yeah, i dun no if the toy with 218k (km's) on it would make it there, plus i would have to buy more than seals if i did get there to get back:)
thanks anyways!
