anybody ever done this. I saw a CJ at the mall the other day (it was christmas time give me a break) and he had what looked like an 8247 but the motor was mounted perpendicular to the cable drum. I tried to look a little closer and it seemed like the winch was a pto style that had a gear box mated directly to the winch that had an electric motor. from what I could tell it was either a 2 or three gear gear box.

Does anybody know if any reduction needs to happen before the winch or is it winch specific. Also does anybody know if a starter motor would do the trick.

If this is possible anybody know where to get a large enough motor

I ask for a couple of reasons the main one is I have a pto winch and will not have a drive train that supports it. I know get an electric but I am just trying to be cheap

thanks

the winch you're describing sounds like a Ramsey RE series worm drive winch.... they are essentially the same as a PTO winch
they have a small gear box that bolts to the bearing plate that holeds the worm gear in... and the same motor as an 8274

IT could also be a old sidewinder winch. They are basiclly setup the same way you described.

What brand of PTO is it ? Have you thought of selling the PTO and using that money to help buy a new electric winch?

Winch motors can be gotten from Pierce Products out of TX. Sorry dont have a link. Do a search for Pierce Winches I guess. Also their winches are heavy duty and very inexpensive cause they are not playing in the game . I think they sell mostly industrial like wrecker manufactureres etc.

thanks for the info guys.

the winch I saw was not a side winder. It sounds like the one airzuki described.

the winch I have is a braden ~8000lb. It is pretty freakin big. I have thought about selling it to fund an electric but wanted to check out options first.

thanks again
