stole this off another BB.

how about a landrover lt-230?
big as a 205
lower low than a 300
you could get one cheap less than $400
or trade one for you 300
like I did
off set rear out-put is your only hang-up but this can be dealt with and puts your pumpkins in a row

How hard is it to find one of these? Are they a reasonable choice? How much do they cost, and are they adaptable to any US transmissions?

I have seen a few on e-bay and there in all Disco's and D-90's. So getting one form a wreck should be easy. There full time AWD! They have straight cut gears and have gear whine built in. They have a funky huge drum parking brake on the rear output. There is a bolt on crawler box that is something insane like 6.5:1.

Thinking out loud here. The older range rovers used a 727 so I think the rear tailhousing from a RR would have a "adapter" that could be used on the front half of any other 727. I would work just like a IH/Jeep hybrid 727.

The current auto trans that is used is a ZF HP22 four speed. The 4 speed stick is rover built and has not been know as a beefy unit.

i would consider the LT230 to be *almost* on par with an atlas. and sooo much cheaper! they have more than a 3:1 low, and 4:1 gears and a crawler are available. super beefy, fairly light (aluminum case), and are relatively cheap. every single truck i plan on building i am going to use one of these cases. they are ultra reliable too, i have heard of no problems with tcases breaking or anything of the like. go for it!

PHHHHT The frt output bearing only lasts 40-50K! Yea it's a 25.00 bearing and a 8.00 seal but still a PITA

that first quote was by me
i'm i the process of bolting one up behind a sm-420
and i have connections to a very cheap way to go to part time 4wd
and if your case is set up right your bearings should survive
if you want to know more contact me and I'll put you in touch with a shop that knows how to put a lt-230 behind a sm-420 and have it survive a big block caddy
as far as i'm concerned the motors and trannys from rover are junk, but the t-cases and frames are bomber

Timm Cooper is a legend and his rigs are incredible. Guy I know bought his 88 with the cummins and dual salisburys.

Part time conversion is NOT cheap though. I won't mention a price but a lot.

I am getting mine from these guys with the ultra rare never seen in the US 1.004 high range (most US Lt 230s come with a 1.2ish high range and 3.2ish low so it is not really 3:1 low)

www.autoconv.com

$800 for a fresh rebuild. You have to ask for part time and it costs a little more but worth it to me as rover front axles and cvs are crap and fail from fatigue but salisbury rears are tough a nails.

LT230s get whinny and the stupid bearings on both output shafts are always getting worn but the case itself is bombproof. The only known fault is some of the early ones suffer input shaft wear combined with output shaft wear on the trannies do to an oiling issue.

The crawler box is known to explode, and while I know of no issues with teh maxidrive low range conversion it is well over 1000 last I checked.

Ron

Rover trannies are not CRAP! I know of 2 zf auto failures. That thing never breaks. The 727 which is only 83-85 RRs is also extremely tough. The manuals are horrible however.

ok, mom

i'm building something very similar to your future rig
and if you want an auto this would be my suggestion
tourque built 440
727 auto
lt-230
eaton rear axle (this axle is already off-set to the passenger side);)
60 front

as for you evil
i take back the crappy lr tranny statement (at least from the autos)

but don't spend too much on your part time conversion
cause the price is coming down
just call mister Cooper

Crazy Uncle Freddy,

Wow - if I ever get posted to the West coast i shall have to look you up....that thread looked great....I love that kind of trail (all rocks all the time gets boring)...and I love an eclectic collection of rigs like that ...Hybrid Rovers to Fullsize Dodges...cool!

There was a guy in the Welsh Land Rover Club, some 25 years ago, that bobed a RR frame / drivetrain so a Series I body would fit on, so (in his words):

"I could bomb down the motorway and people would say, bloody hell, look at that series I doing 90mph!!"
