I bought d60front/d70 rear axles to mount under my 40. I'll be taking Billa Vistas advice and cut the front d60 down to have 64.5" wms to wms and retain the 40's spring perch width. I have a set of Hummer rims with the stock 7"backspacing. I don't think that will work. Question is what is the backspacing I will need (reset the centers) for these rims to work on a '68FJ-40. Any been there done that advice? Thanks maddog

My 60 is 64.5. I run 4.5BS hummer wheels with my 38x11 boggers and it dosent rub at all. Gets maybe about 1 or 2 inches from the springs at full turn.

Cool, what does the tracking width wind up to be.

That was about what I was guessing. 76-78". I don't think I would want to go any wider than78". Who did you use to redo your Hummer centers and do you have a contact number or link to them?

I have 6 differnt bs wheels I use. USA6x6 did two of them, I did two of them and two are stock BS.

I would go through 66cjdean. Doing them yourself isnt that hard however I think its worth it to have somebody do it for you for $50 more.

I 2nd the recommendation of Dean. He is a good guy, does good work and his price is very fair.

He did my stuff:

http://www.birfield.com/nuke/modules/gallery/1-tonstuff?page=2

There's some on page 1 of the pics too.

He re-set backspacing on hummer wheels to 3.5", added a re-bar rock ring to the outer lip.

He narrowed the front D60 to 64.5", added a mount for ram assist. Installed a new perch at cruiser width to match the cast perch.

He shaved and plated the rear C&C 14-bolt, removed the perches and added a mongo anti-wrap bar mount. He also fabricated some cool spacers to make Shaker's RDB brackets work with the C&C drum mounts.

He tapped the aluminum cap on my scout box for ram assist, and swapped out the front cap for a billet cap and tapped that too.

He also narrowed the front tie-rod to match the narrowed front housing.

He got the work done quick too.

I should have the rest of the goods to start putting the axles back together next week. Can't wait to get this thing back on the trail!

a 1.5" spacer is all it takes on a front D60 to clear the TR mounts.

Do the 66CJDean route for your centers.
you will not be dissapointed..

BTW, I am leaving the axles FW..

it will give me a 80" width with the 39.5" Irocks..

rear will be 78"

I am not using hummer wheels so my overall width is quite a bit wider than everyone else's width. I think I am around 84" wide with my 60 cut down 4" on the long side. I am running 3.5" BS wheels with 38.5SXs. I did not want to redo my spring hangers so I narrowed my front to fit my 27.5" hanger spacing (Jeep width, not TLC width).

..Are you cutting 5" of the longs side?

No I 'll cut 4.5" off the long side. Per Billavista's article of d60 axles. Of course I'll check the measurements to make sure. As soon as I pick up the 60 (next weekend)

Pretty sure the FJ40 spring width is 27.5. 32 width should be stock on the D60. 32" - 27.5" = 4.5"

You should be cutting off 4.5" on the long side and then the perches should match right up (after relocating the long side perch).

Whatever you do.....DON'T CUT 4.5" OFF WITHOUT MEASUREING 100 TIMES YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!

Don't trust anyone else's numbers. Some people say Chevy's are 32" and some say they are 31.5". This is a huge difference when it comes time for a custom inner axle. Measure your spring perch distance and then measure your Chevy spring perch distance. The drive side perch does not usually have a hole. It is a slot!!??!!?? I have no idea why, but they just do. This could be why so many people dissagree with the spring perch measurement.

TLC spring perches are normally 27", Jeeps are normally 27.5" (pre-YJ). Jeep YJs are around 32" and I know they just say they squeeze their springs in 1/4" per side to fit on stock Chevy housings......which means (according to them) the Chevy in not 32".

32 - 27 = 5"
31.5 - 27 = 4.5"

Please double and triple check for yourself as you never know when your specific housing may be different.

Yes, I can agree with you 100%. My 40 is 27" on the perches>>that's a given<< standard GM,,, are some I might say are 31.5" >>that varies with ??<< The d60 I'm getting was set up for a YJ so double, tripple checking measurements is a definate.
