i have a question for you chevy guys, is it true there is an adapter between the mated sm465 and np205 in a stock 1979 1 ton truck? why did they do this? just to keep the drive shafts all the same length? is there any way to ditch the adapter to save overall length? thx

there is an adapter between every trans and transfer case. the 465-205 is about 1" longer then it needs to be, that is the coupler has about an inch of unused space in the middle

thx, do you know the total length from the bell housing to the middle of the rear output yoke?

Without an adapter with a 465 and a 205 your front shaft would be so short it would not function except on the street. Before doing the doubler my front CV would bind at droop even after grinding off the limiters. So unless you are going to run a high pinion with very little articulation you need more length not less
