: RC 60 strength

I just ordered bigger tires (39" boggers) and I need to upgrade the rear axle in my EB. It has a 514 big bock and I need a rear that will not break.

Will a Tera60 RC hold up with custom semi-float 35 sline shafts, detroit and 5.13's or do I need to go beefier. I am trying to cut down on weight and increase ground clearnace so if I can stay away from the D70 and 14 bolt that would be great.

Will the Tera hold up? What do you think?

Thanks,
Chad

if youre set on a 60, i'd stay away from the reverse cut gears(weaker in rear app.). with your engine, i'd look at the 14 bolt, and shave it.....

I say 14 bolt.

H8Monday on this board has a YJ that he just put a 14 bolt in the rear. He cut off the BIG old lip on the bottom of the case and thats it. He has the same tires and wheel size as my YJ with a rear 9". I only have 1/4" ground clearance more than his mildly shaved 14 bolt.

Sorry, completely off topic :flipoff2:

OK I am not too familiar with the 14 bolt so...... Yes I did search but cant use the "14".
Anyway, If I do the 14 bolt I will do the disk brake kit. Can I change to 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern or am I stuck with the 8 lug pattern? Also, will a 15 inch rim fit on the 14 bolt or are mods required? Anyone know how much heavier a disked 14 bolt is than a semifloat disked D60?

Thanks,
Chad

when you do a search type this *14* now see what you find.

yes a 15" rim will fit the 14 with no mods
rear discs is an easy swap.
changing the wheel hubs to 5 lug can be done but not easily.

you'll find quite a bit of info so do the search

With some work you can have 5X5.5 on a FF14 but not on a 60. The hub is to big. My neighbor runs a built 472 with 39.5 boggers on the trail and to and from the trail and hasn't broke a ring or pinion yet and he breaks everything. If you need the driveline angle then go for it. I say weld on 14 bolt ends on your RC60, thats what I did. Remember don't drive like an idiot.

Good point.

There are better times to get it on then others though.

Also, with a 14 bolt if you convert to disk brakes you loose about 80lbs.

Any idea how much a disked 14 bolt weighs?

I think you will be fine with the RC 60 if you want the high pinion, and you have the money for it. Broncos usually don't need it for driveline angles unless you have a lot of suspnesion lift, and down travel or have moved the motor back some. The reason to go with the other options is money more than strength, I mean it is possible to break a ring and pinion with that setup, but not too likely.
