: Some pics of my FF 60/70/14 bolt jig
66CJdean 01-01-2002, 09:23 PM I had some requests for a picture of the jig I made to weld on the spindles on full floaters so here they are. This one jig or in my case 2, 1 for each side, will work on 60's(not all) 70's, and 14 bolts. http://www.respite.org/images/cj66dean/60jig1.jpg http://www.respite.org/images/cj66dean/60jig2.jpg
Ghetto Fab. 01-01-2002, 09:27 PM Looks simple and sweet! One question though, what does your jig center itself on? It looks like you are using the axle shaft to locate the jig. Or do you use some sort of alignment bar? Just curious.
Kevo
66CJdean 01-01-2002, 10:41 PM 1.5" bar.
JEEPRZ 01-02-2002, 09:40 AM Looks nice. You wanna sell me one? What does it center on the spindle? Looks like the outer bearing journal, but its kinda hard to tell
Chark 01-02-2002, 02:47 PM :smokin: Hey Dean...Using that type of jig would allow you to shorten the width by reworking the spindle ends, right? Do you have more pics of the jig? Looks good!! I want to have my machinist bud build me one!! Thanks for the info.
66CJdean 01-02-2002, 04:52 PM I don't know what you mean about narrowing? The jig uses a 14 bolt spindle nut pressed into it and then just thread on the spindle and slip it on the bar.
SeanP 01-04-2002, 12:30 AM Sweet work, Dean. I'll keep you in mind when I build a 60 for the XJ. Hope you had fun last sat, we saw rain and stayed indoors.
SeanP and Marni
66CJdean 01-04-2002, 06:22 PM The rain wasn't to bad but it would have been better without it.
Alaskan Assassin 01-04-2002, 06:40 PM Hey Dean how does that Jig work? I see how it works on the spindels and all, but do you put the case in the inside with out thhe spiders in it? Our what?
66CJdean 01-04-2002, 08:54 PM I have jigs in the carrier caps that support the bar and then these slide down the bar to the housing and then weld. I suggest 4 tack welds on both sides and then spin the bar to make sure all is well. If OK then weld it. Since the wall thickness is .375 I do 2 passes and start the 2nd pass 180 deg. from where the 1st ended.
Alaskan Assassin 01-05-2002, 12:29 AM OK I get yah now... Why I was asking is because I am going to be cutting down my rear 60 soon. And I was wondering on how to make the Jig, but now I have seen what you do it looks a lot E-Zer than what people say.....
Alaskan Assassin 01-05-2002, 12:31 AM Do you have any pictures of what the inside looks like with the Jig in there?
66CJdean 01-05-2002, 09:37 AM No.
They look like aluminum doughnuts. 3.806 OD with a 1.502 ID. The bar is 80" long and slides through the whole thing until eaven on each side and then slide on the ends.
Alaskan Assassin 01-05-2002, 11:06 AM I was thinking about putting the original case in there and bolting it down, with out the spider gears in it, so the bar could slide all the way threw it.... Would that work?
66CJdean 01-05-2002, 07:56 PM I Don't know what the size of the ID of the end of the carrier but it will need to be no larger than the ID of the spindle that is if you are building a FFer
Alaskan Assassin 01-05-2002, 08:18 PM Yah that is true, it is a FFer though.. Built the high steer arm for the front today:) would if you just put the one spider gears in? Then you would have the size of the shaft with the little spider gear.
66CJdean 01-05-2002, 08:26 PM If you had a bar that was the OD of the ID of the splines then it would work and just ride on the teeth of the splines. But, I don't know how you would keep the side gears in without the spider gears and I don't know how you would keep the spiders gears in without the cross pin so YOUR SCREWED:flipoff2:
Alaskan Assassin 01-05-2002, 08:46 PM Yah I see what your saying... I figure something out:D
66CJdean 01-05-2002, 08:51 PM I know Chris Alston Chassis Works sells narring jigs but they are $$$ if you buy the whole thing but not to bad if you only get the parts you need. So does Mark Willams
Alaskan Assassin 01-05-2002, 10:51 PM Yah thanks for the advice, I think we can figure something out though... Thanks though :D
