im in the midst of deciding. from my pov its a lot easier to deal with the rock block. it doesnt seem to be any more money than a 8to1 gear set w/ rebuild kit and labor.

what are the down falls to just using a rock block.or vise versa

this is a trailer-trail rig only so high gear does not really matter,thanks

There are no down falls about a rock block..brent has created an awesome doubler box......No vibrations, and with a cheap 4:1 case this can make many different gear choices:D

news flash- im a little confused:rolleyes: so the rock block can creat the same gear ratio as an 8:1 gear set correct?

sorry if i offended anyone by the "downfalls of the rock block''

i guess my real question is what is a less pita way to achieve an 8:1 gear reduction?

8:1 gears or a 4:1 case and a 2:1 doubler box.:D

awesome. thanks for the knowledge. ill be running 5.38s in dana 44 with some 38.5x11.00 boggers, sounds like ill get the box and if i need to later ill pull the case and put in a differant gear set.

Id get a case first!

get a 6:1 or an 8:1 case at first, if you need more, then go with the doubler...

well if i were to buy a gear set it would be the 8:1s, now if i buy that it almost is worth my time to buy the rock block instaed, ie no pulling apart tcase. is there a reason you would go with the tcase gears before a block?

That's tough. I have a rock block and I'm pretty down with it so far. But I'm running a GRSII behind it (4.89) and stock for now toy 4.10's making a 132:1 final.
And you say that it is a trail only/trailered rig and if you buy the rock block you will not buy a gears for the case right? If that's the case, let's see what the numbers are.......

3.652x8x5.38= 157:1

3.652x1.816x2.268x5.38= 80:1

So it does not take a rocket surgen to figure that out.:rolleyes: :flipoff2:

$890 Vs $1350, seems like quite a bit more money. If your not going to rebuild your stock case if you buy the Rockblock, why would you rebuild it if you put the 8:1 gears in? I would check the bearings and clearances first, then decide if a rebuild was needed.

If your running a 1.6 engine you can get OTT's Kicker 3 (http://www.ottindustries.com/kicker3.htm) ($600) and a 4.16 sami gear set ($400) and it would be cheaper than the 8:1's alone. You would also get the beefier transmission and heavier flywheel.

Plus the price of the Kick trans and kick tcase though right?

I do think it's a sweet setup though.

I don't see how the rock block is a doubler if it's in front of the case?

Doesn't matter where it is in the drivetrain as long as it's before the tires hit the rocks.

Isn't it called a doubler because it doubles the amount of transfer cases you have not the gearing necessarily. :flipoff2:
