We got the Diesel XJ out here.....It wasn't a bad rig - heck it was the only way we could get a stick shift (all the 4.0L Petrol rigs came in Auto only)....But it was a bit under powered.
What sort of info are you after?

Is it a decent engine? HP torque parts availablity etc
I understand they were 84-85ish only over here and maybe a couple thousand were made?
I dunno

I have a Deisel XJ. It is a little under powered but a very good vehicle. The 2.1 L TD gets great mileage, I regularly get about 30 MPG with it. I use it for a dailey driver and the most off road that it has ever seen is the dirt boat launch at my families camp but it seems like it would do very well. I have reached the point where I need a tow vehicle for my trail rig so I think that I am going to sell this, if any of you would be interested let me know. If not, thats fine, and I would be happy to answer any questions in general about Deisel XJs, and two anser some ones question, I was told that there were only about 3500 of these things made in the US.

i would have thought that a diesle XJ would not appear in the US. I bet it would be a great donor for an off road machine. Lots of torque.
anyone got any pics?

as far as i know, it's a Renault diesel that is notorious for being, well. . .
a french pile of shit.
Thank god they didn't hook it up to the peugeot tranny, or did they?
that would just be way too french for me.

AFAIK the engine is an Italian "VM" engine.
It could be that renault is using this engine as well.
(VM diesels http://www.vmdiesels.com/, )
VM motori (SP??) also builds engines for stationary use,
I think that "Detroit Diesel" is VM's partner in the US (??)
There is also a larger version (used in the GC here in Europe),
which is a 5 cylinder version of the 2.1
As for the 2002 models, i seems to recall that Chrysler/VM is upgrading the diesel engine to "common-rail" technology.
AN XJ with a diesel and a stick, has some *excellent* engine braking capabilities, when going downhill...
