I spotted this truck 2 years ago and stopped to talked to the owner. Its a 73 seems totally stock, Rustoleum paint job and the owner knows little about LC's, it looks O.K. but I was really holding back for a 76 or better. $1500 and I could probably get it for $1200 what do you think???
The hubs are warn - is this stock?
The 72 was coarse spline - Right?
cant remember if it was 4spd on the floor or 3 on the tree?

sounds like a good deal to me if the body is in good shape. Drums all around. older F (not that big of a deal IMHO)
Actually it sounds like my 72. A very good builder.
Warn is not stock but it might as well have been.
72 or 73??? Shoudl be fine spline. Just not quite as strong as the mini birfield.
Three on the tree is stock, but a lot of them have been converted.
The older tubs have a much stronger metal to them.

As said above you found a good platform with the 3 speed case, but the birfields are course spline not fine. Fine spline did not show up until disc brakes. A mini truc conversion gets you fron disc no problem. The hubs are not stock and since most fj40 of that time came to america with block out plated the warn hub is most likely a dealer installed option. If its a floor shift then its a three on the floor as this was an option or a conversion. The 72 can be made to a good wheeler with the addition of a lock right, a mild lift and the 420 conversion. I would also add power stearing but that's just me as I like to drive one handed so I can have a soda while I drive. :D Nice fine at 1200 as I paid 1800 for my 75.

 blasphemer:D
The 60 will always be my Daily driver, I'de like a 40 for the trails and this is one begging to be in the woods. At least when I break it I'll still have a way to work.

BTW its a 71, I was shooting my mouth off the other day and called it a 72 AND a 73 (DOH!)
I want to go by and take some pics and have a REAL mechanic look at the drivetrain but I've stopped twice and I don't want to bother the guy again till I'm serious. I REALLY shouldn't buy it but life is not always about being practical:D
I mentioned it to the wife jokingly last night and she didn't act suprised:rasta: we have our first baby due in April and I only have 16 years to finish the buildup:laughing:
When I do go back where do I need to look for rust problems??? The guy painted it rustoleum black years ago and it either helped or hid any visible problems.
